Do you have oxfuzz bass clips somewhere? |
not sure if you caught this when I originally posted it. Oxfuzz Bass Fuzz - YouTube
it doesn't sound great on its own, a little fizzy, but its perfect in a band mix as the guitars and cymbals cover the fizziness, it also helps to role the tone back a bit on the bass.
edit:
here is the standard germanium oxfuzz. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=RLzDIc-a85Q
sorry about the inconsistent volume, still getting used to the new camera.

Something that will make my Ric and slightly bright rig sound like a P bass with the tone rolled off and a amp crapping out. |

Also, I bought an EBS Fafner amp to replace my Eden preamp (and Carvin power). Holy crap what a difference. The Eden is so nice but the EBS is just so... much nicer. It sounds a lot more full, more like a tube Ampeg but still with some of that Eden hi-fi tone that I loved. Somehow, it's even heavier than the pre-power setup too.
I can't say enough about the Fafner. It has endless headroom (even going into a single 8 ohm 4x10) and is just so warm sounding.

Because a real 70's slab P will cost way too much and why wreck a beauty? Im thinking of getting a fretless SX, thanks for reminding me cosmicpimp2, and turning it into a modern day interpretation of those classic, knobs up the wazoo, heavily modified 60's and 70's basses. If I cant get a unlined, rosewood finger board from Rondomusic, and the maple that comes with it is lacking, then I'll put a Warmoth or Fender rosewood, unlined neck on it. Throw a Gibby mudbucker at the neck, plop in a upgraded split P, and a J coil at the bridge. New "vintage" pots and cloth wiring. Upgraded tuners, bridge, maybe even a brass nut will make there way onto the bass.
That's the plan for the actual hardware and pickups and electronics...but how its all put together is were I start getting confused by what I can and can't wire up because it just doesn't work that way. That and I'm indecisive on what I want to do.
One idea I had was a master vol/tone, and a 3 pickup blend knob, if those even exist, that when placed in the middle is just the split p pickup, and then a switch that overrides the blend knob and all pickups work together.
OR, lately I've been influenced by Billy Sheehan's bass, have the split P electronics stay completely separate, then have a separate master vol/tone and a 2 way blend for the neck and bridge pickups. However I don't really want to do the whole 2 separate jacks, is it possible to have 2 separate working systems through 1 jack? With this set up I would imagine myself having the split p on for a majority of the time and blending the mudbucker or the J coil into the mix for the multiplitude of tones I feel I could get with this setup.
Sorry about the uber long, pretty pointless post, but sometimes writing stuff down helps me figure stuff out, in fact while writing this I'm starting to lean towards my second idea, if things can work out that way. But hey I figured that you guys could give me some opinions, ideas or problems that I am overlooking.

FUZZZ - why do so many bassists like it super dark? I feel like I'm alone in liking a real crisp overdrive on my bass so that it's heavy, but cuts through like a damn chainsaw. A lot of fuzz I hear sounds SUPER dark, and almost muddy, and I just can't get down with it. Maybe I'm crazy? Am I the only one who likes it crisp? I love a lot bands that seem to have this tone and I'm just curious as to why? Why not bring it forward a bit more? Hunters Practice 3-30-11 - YouTube
FF to like 1:15 and you'll get an idea of what my tone is pretty much like. Obviously keep in mind this is an iFlip video camera so the sound quality isn't the greatest.
fuzzy brethren of doom, shed some light on this for me!

fuzzy brethren of doom, shed some light on this for me! | My bass playing isn't great, so i don't do anything that needs to cut through or stick out. I prefer to be in the background. Also I personally can't compete with the guitars or drums in my band at anything above 950Hz so I focus on 100-400Hz region. I have no need for a bright OD or fuzz.
Edit: I don't cut everything above 950Hz, but I find its diminishing returns so I don't intentionally EQ it in.

As for me, I like it kinda dark cos I like it fuuuuzzy not fiiiiizzy. Plus by just leaning to the dark side a little you can get that great 70s geezer tone that just feeeeels like what your ears expect....and sometimes I like a more mid heavy fuzz...depends on the song.
