So no more Green for Al or what?

It can be very good for a band Om's size. It means Ampeg provides him with a backline on his tours without some of the overhead of transportation and storage that comes with moving around Al's Green gear. Makes a lot of sense to me, financially.
And at the end of the day, a guy like Al gets his sound from his fingers. The massive volume is all just carrier waves. |

So no more Green for Al or what? | It's not easy being Green. It sounds like he is endorsing Ampeg, and has dropped Green for them. But I find it odd that a lot of people are coming back from shows and not digging the tone. Well, for one, I am sure it sounds different, but he should be able to make those Ampegs sound good. I suspect that his effects signal chain would be more to blame for such a dramatic change in tone. But who knows? It could just be the desk pushing out some weird levels or something. I wonder what he has to say about it.

Loving Advaitic Songs, the string-section is pure win!

Thinking about it, it seems there was a lot of unfocused sub lows, and very little else. When the drums and guitar/keyboard were playing I had to really concentrate to tell what notes he was playing even though there was tons of rumble happening.
The guitar/keys were mixed way too loud, but Al needed more mids. The only time it was easy to hear what he was playing was when he had the distortion on.
This was in a place that holds between 150-200 people and is setup so you are very close to the stage. I was within 30 feet of his amp the whole set. |

Sure he uses ampeg now, but why sell his green? (assuming he did sell them) I remember a recent interview where he said that things went so well the last couple of years of touring with sleep again that they were thinking of a new album, he could use the greens for that |

He would think he heard something on the roof, (we do have huge raccoons here) and run outside, climb the apartment stairs and run all over my roof trying to find his assailant. Then he would be pissed off that he didn't find anything. I am no doctor, but I believe he was becoming paranoid schizophrenic. Its given me motivation to carry more often. Anyway, he finally gave the landlord notice that he would be leaving at the end of the month. Thank god... Good riddance to bad baggage. |
This lady moved in back in august and a couple weeks after she moved in I ran into her as I was coming home from work and she was all nice and sweet old lady-ish but was speaking wackdoo. Talking about how she was a psychiatric survivor and how she has an inner ear problem which causes her to yell sometimes. But she is full of it. I have worked with the mentally handicapped/ill for almost 20yrs so I could tell she was not being straight with me. All the other tenants have their own stories about her and shes only been here since august! I have heard her say some creepy ass things while shes been walking down the hall, like..."the human servings are on the table" and "Innocent people are going to die" and the other day she had her front door open ranting about poisons. She sounds like a mixture of the crazy cat lady from the Simpsons and the drunkest infant ever with a side order of satan. She doesn't even drink. I have called the cops on her twice and both times she just gets quiet and hides until they leave. lol Well my landlord doesn't want to lose me and the other tenants so she gave her 30days notice but that was about 34days ago. Landlord assures me she'll be out at the beginning of next week. Its kinda sad though cuz she is so wacked out she is choosing to go live in a homeless shelter instead of taking her meds or living n a group home. At this point though she can go live under a bridge for all I care. Its going to be nice being able to actually get a full nights sleep or not hear constant screaming and yelling. I have been living with my ipod and my headphones for my tv surgically attached to my head so I wouldn't have to hear her.

On the other hand, she sounds like proper inspiration for some doom epic |

So no more Green for Al or what? | He hasn't really used any of that stuff in years. He never really toured with it too much either. The last time I saw them he was using Ampeg heads and Emperor cabs. |

At one point they covered all the logos with duct tape. He had a couple of Electrics built and used those for a while. Matt hasn't used his Matamp stuff in years either. |

Do you think it was a mix issue, or maybe just the gear he was using? If the other bands sounded OK, then I would tend to think it was an issue in his signal chain.

The place they played (Johnny Brenda's) tends to have good sound but I don't think it handles massive bass well. I saw a show with Hail Hornet and Zoroaster there and Zoroaster sounded great but the bass player only had a single 2X15. Then Hail Hornet played and Dixie had his standard 2 2X15s and I could barely make the bass out.
Also, I have no idea if Om had their own sound guy with them. I am guessing it was a house sound guy because I can't imagine their own sound person mixing the keys/guitars so loud (I mean that is mixing 101), so it might not have had anything Al was doing. |

Had a long practice day today, 3ish -10. Made up for the entire almost 2 weeks, because I was hunting. It was great, We're finally getting our sound down. I'm set, I'm probably lying but I REALLY dont need anything else.
And about Om, like everyone is saying, I'm sure Al can make everything sound as good as it can be, its all comes down to each in house sound guy or his PF500 with "wimpy" cabs. But IMO the visual aspect of this genre is a bigger part than say in, the straight up blues. and nothing Al could ever get will look like those Greens...
