For me, the key to a good delay pedal has always been whether or not it trails off when it's turned off. That always sounds more natural to me. The main delay on my board has been an RE-20 since they were released.

In case you don't need all the goodness that the RE-20 offers.

I know there was some delay talk a few threads back but I aint going back! | What do you want out of a delay? There's so many options that knowing your desired end result would help me make a good suggestion for you. Do you want analog or digital tone? Do you want modulation on board? Do you want a single pedal or something that offers multiple types and presets? Do you want something that oscillates easy or not so easy? What kind of pedal board real estate do you have available? Would you like it to have a built in looper? Do you want it to have a trails option? etc... etc... Delays are hard to recommend.
If you want something basic, that works well with bass and is relatively inexpensive as far as delay pedals, the afore mentioned MXR Carbon Copy is a great place to start. I used one on my bass board but i sold it to fund the Dunwich DI which has an FX loop that I'm going to send through my guitar boards Timeline and Space.
