Reason i ask is this P bass is the lightest, fastest, best playing bass i have. Its a parts bass that really just fell together perfectly, per say. I have had 2 pickups in its and on to the third and i afraid it will never be "right". Thoughts?
Bass in question: | Well, look on the bright side. At least you are getting some good bench time. Pretty soon, you will be like a NASCAR pit crew with pickup swaps. It is hard to beat the Mighty P! It is part of the holy trinity, P, SVT, and 810.
That said, what sound are you going for? I have a P and a P/J atm, and they both nail the P sound with different pickups. There are many passive pickups that should work just fine. Many like the Fender original '62s. I have stock in my 2007 Am standard and I think I have DiMarzio Model P and model J in my MIM Precision special P/J passive. Although they could just be Fender generic PUs that look like DiMarzios.
If I were to replace any of them, I would probably just go with Fender Custom shop Ps and Js. From the sound clips that I have heard, They sound pretty sweet.

DOD 250 clone goes where the beer can is. also, taking pictures of your gear is a funny way to get people to correlate who you are on forums if you follow both this thread and the doom room fb edition :P |

So, Shrinebuilder. Had a first listen last night, not totally overwhelmed, but enough to have another go at it tonight. Maybe with a little more volume. Heavy needs volume.

I have built 3 basses and saved countless others from the trash bin. It super fun wrenching, I wish I could make it a day job.
My holy trinity
'74 P, '74 SVT, '73 (flat back)810.
Like I said, played some dimarzio's and their cool but not my thing. I'm also thinking the fender 62 will be a lot like my current spb-1 so I'm not even going to try. Hopefully the weird, hot, cheap pup does the trick. If not ordering a p-46 and after that ill prolly break it down do some part swapping and sell it as parts. |

So to kick up some discussion... I've been trying to become competent on the 6 string guitar for a couple months now. Took a few lessons, learned the basic open chords, beginnings of the blues scale and some scale improv, and been spending most of my time jamming on major/minor/7th/maj7/min7 barre chords. My big hands make barre chords the most rewarding practice time.
The lessons are turning out to be really valuable in paving a path to learning, giving it some focus and direction. But I'm taking a break over the holidays and not going back til mid-Jan.
What would you doomers who play 6 string recommend to study next? Any specific directions in theory, or start learning/playing along to specific recorded songs? Throw me some suggestions/examples. I'm feeling rather helpless at work, wishing I could be home practicing, so at least I can do a bit of research during the day and put it to practice when I'm home.

Are you looking to focus more on rythmn and chord work or more on lead licks and soloing?

I would say try different variations of chords to try to get new sounds. Like a 3-2-1 chord for the C, maybe move your ring finger around to try and get some dissonant sounds...
Again, I played punk rock for years. Don't listen to me

Mostly I'm just trying to familiarize my brain with all the chord sounds, so I can recognize a chord being played and recreate it naturally without much thought. I have plenty of work to do with that, and getting my hands' muscle memory to remember the shapes of chords. After doing that for a couple hours yesterday I brought up a few Red Fang tabs that I was able to play through, love ending a session on a confidence booster.
