I miss it and want to go home and hold it in my arms... then crank some fuzz and volume and rattle some windows. I'm not sure if it applies to all rays or not, but I want to say it has the hottest output of any other bass I've owned. When I run my fuzz, I have to lower the gain on the amp or it starts to get really clippy and unpleasant. Not really a swarm of bees sound, more like cooking bacon without the benefits of receiving bacon. With the right knob turns though it sounds great to me.
... or you could just make it passive like toast ;p. I'm not doing all that.

Moot point since I can't afford one anyway. |

My cab wasn't mic'd but the sound guy did take a DI from my amp AND another separate from just the bass. Audio was recorded from a room mic I think. Not sure exactly what you're hearing here..haha.
'08 Fender American Standard P-bass with heavy guage Rotosound Swing 66s, Fender 300 Pro head, Fender 215 Pro cab. All "clean" channel except Spacegrass.

if you wanna hear that music man sound at its finest just listen to Blood Sugar Sex Majic, its all over that album. on Mothers Milk as well. | My under standing was good tone secret was a custom made dirt pedal and his clean ampeg/dirty ampeg setup and the two wahs he used on them. Quote:

could be wrong about mothers milk, but i never saw him use a spector ever and i was a huge flea fan boy.
edit: guess he did use a wal and a stringray or BSSM, not a lot of wal shots in Funky Monks. | +1 Quote:

If you're looking for a cheap ray, I recommend checking one of these out... same hardware and electronics afaik but a more plain body shape and a thinner neck. Mine was $250 at gc and you can probably get it cheaper with a coupon code.. might even be some used out there. If you have your sites set on the older sterlings or the fatter rays.. well just try one and see if you change your mind or not.
I was a little worried about the whole active/passive thing at first but I think I've come to grips with it. My findings... I experimented with changing the attenuation of the signal before and after fuzz to see what the best result would be... basically to make the signal a little weaker. I tried a direct box before the fuzz and that sounded alright.. I found later that just messing with amp gain after the fuzz to control the attenuation worked better. Articulate without being overly harsh. If my amp didn't have an input gain on it I'd probably run a buffer of some sort to tone it down...
Would like to hear from Toast to see how his passive direct connect ray is still doing and if he still likes it. Wish I didn't miss his band a few weeks ago, wife was too busy doing her hair .

I keep going back and forth between getting an el oso and an osd. If user get the osd I'll get it in a pedal with a rat tail. Demon rat! Torn. Damn these first world problems! |
