I have two amazing tube amps capable of giving me endless amounts of doom! Total cost for both is only $1,025! I think that's pretty ****ing good if you ask me!

I think I wouldn't care as much about the "big brother" aspect, because I wouldn't have so much hatred and disdain for the country I live in and the overtly oppressive / self serving / corporate owned government that runs it. And if I don't dig one, I could hop a train and go to a different one.
Currently in the research phase now, and wouldn't make any moves until my IT job dries up here. I hear they have a much better / more appreciative music scene too.
I love the argument of "thats what makes America so special, you have the freedom to openly hate it!" The Kool-aid is getting stale.

I have owned J bass configs, MM config, and both P and P+J setups. Between active vs passive, I find that passive basses play nicer with my other gear. I had a hard time finding my tone with a very nice, active German Warwick (j bass config). I also had a Squier P bass that was setup like butter but the neck felt very thick and flat. I also have played on a P+J SX bass that left me feeling like the J pickup didn't add anything but an extra knob to an otherwise beautiful sounding P bass. Neck was uncomfortable. The OLP bass I have (licensed MM copy), is awesome playing. The neck width is wider than my Jazz bass but is still veery comfortable. The stock pickup sucked so I put in a basslines. Made a world of difference. My Jazz has been my #1 for a long time and only just recently lost it's spot to the 1lb lighter MM bass. The Carvin I have on order is a Passive SB4k (J bass config). It was ordered to be extra light for my back and should be here on 06/04.
I have noticed that most bass players for this genre of music are playing passive instruments. I don't know what it is about the active electronics that just don't work for me, but apparently I'm not alone. Also, I like solid state power and tubes in the pre. I don't really use the tubes to fuzz the sound at all, I run my pregain at noon. It just happens to be what works for me. Most dudes will swear by all tube amps. While they are definitely cool, a broke guy like me could not afford all new tubes for an SVT. Plus , my back wouldn't handle it. In times like this, I remind myself of what my favorite bass player of this genre uses for his famous tone, Solid State Sunn amps. While I don't have a Sunn, I think I cop the tone fairly well. Also 15's. 15" speakers is where it's at for me. I have played through 10's and 12's but 15's are what works for me.

Same as you, I use the pre tubes for compression and EQ more than distortion.... thats what all these redundant fuzz and OD pedals are for.
*** thats not to say I wouldn't pay $500 for one of Josh Pelican's "extras"

*** thats not to say I wouldn't pay $500 for one of Josh Pelican's "extras" | If I thought that I could maintain a tube amp, I would have one for bass. I did have an all tube combo for guitar, but the cost of upkeep was significantly lower. (two EL34's, four 12AX7's, I think )

edit: It's settled, I'll kill 3 birds with one stone. Pick up the CL, eat at mom's then head to the dispensary. Problem solved.

I've used all of them at different times for Doom/Stoner music. They all interact differently with my amps and pedals and have their own strengths.
I'm also not big on active basses. My Carvin is active/passive, but I almost always run it passive. Nothing against them, just never found it to be a necessity for me.
