By decree of her royal majesty the queen herself (the wife), we will be at the next Supervoid show tomorrow if it @#$@# kills us lol. I need to feel this Dually, I have a feeling it will be something like this:
In other news, trying to lay groundwork for my next project. Some kind of metal. Here's hoping.
I guarantee that we will either be really awesome or suck terribly!
Here's the Joyo Ultimate Drive vs Fulltone OCD demo, as promised. Signal chain and settings are noted in the description and comments. I go through most of the useable sweep of both pedals, though not EVERY setting. It gives you at least an idea of how they compare.
My quick observations on the pedals:
The Joyo has a bit more volume on tap, at the very least it has more volume boost earlier in the knob sweep, than the OCD. It also has a bit more gain saturation, but the gain has a more compressed quality to it. The OCD stays a little more "transparent" with the gain as it saturates. I don't like that term much, but in general the notes are a little more clear and the gain is more open and touch sensitive. The Joyo has more low end boost to it, regardless of the Tone setting, but it also has a shorter usable sweep in the Tone control than the OCD. The Joyo also sounds more muddy in the lows and the treble sounds more fizzy, compared to the OCD. The OCD certainly isn't lacking in low end (you can always adjust the EQ on the amp, obviously), but it boosts the low end less than the Joyo and gets brighter quicker in the Tone knob sweep. The Joyo doesn't have a huge gain change between noon and full, the OCD seems a little more linear in how the gain saturates as it sweeps. I find the sweep on both the Gain and Tone knobs to be more useable, linear and flexible with the OCD. The Joyo is a lot more touchy about settings and the big gain and tonal changes occur very quickly in the knob sweep. So it's a lot more difficult to fine tune tones with the Joyo than the OCD.
They're slightly different versions of the same sound. Which sounds "better" depends on your taste. Some of the perceived differences may just be due to direct comparison of settings, as they don't really react the same up and down the sweep of the knobs compared to each other. Minimum and maximum settings reveal more of a true tonal comparison, in my opinion. I also picked my favorite "sweet spot" setting for each pedal and noted the settings. They turned out to be very similar sounds, but very different knob settings.
I plan on keeping the OCD, I like the nature of the gain and the tonal sweep a little better, but the Joyo is a good sounding pedal. I found the OCD a bit more versatile, flexible and more clear sounding.
first of all congrats on getting a p-bass to sound great with nickel rounds...never been able to do it. I really love the OCD but the lack of low end is just too apparent. If someone could build and OCD clone with an active baxandall tone stack where you could regain some clean lows, I think it would be the ultimate OD pedal....paging Mr. Dunwich.
passive baxandall works better IMO and I have my rat pedal with that coming up and it destroys. you just add appropriate recovery gain. Working at 36V is also a plus!

Just bought my guitar player the joyo for Xmas. He really wants an OCD. Hoping he likes it. This was reassuring.
I'm getting some amazon cards for Xmas. Thinking of grabbing the el oso or the musket. Leaning towards the el oso since I'll have a Bluebeard soon. Thoughts?
Coffee is great today. Vanilla lattes supplied by my wife. Currently listening to the new Heavy Eyes album on the stereo and watching my 16mo old son walk around the room headbanging...hehe

Ha! Nice. I added some hot choc mix to the coffee this am.
Morning stoner/doomers. Coffee is hot. My wife's car was stuck in the ice/snow this morning when she had to go to work so she took mine. So first thing this morning I got the shovel and salt and dug it out. Now I'm drinking coffee and trying to warm up before going out to finish gift shopping.

I do not miss shoveling snow and salting. Working today. Looking forward to some mulled mead tomorrow. Just bottled a 4yr old semi sweet.
I'm not a fan, but I'm used to it. It wasn't that bad this morning. Mead sounds tasty. I'm going to have to pick up some fancy holiday booze. The tallboys of Point and Narraganset in the fridge aren't looking too festive.
Thanks Sam, according to internets it's all in my fingers right?
I think pretty much any pedal with a "tone" knob would be better with a Baxandall tone stack. I'm looking forward to trying out that Dunwich RAT in the forthcoming tour box Nick.
As far as low end loss goes, I'm sure there's a little. It's not extreme though as say the average RAT pedal, which has a pretty noticeable low cut. The tone stack does get bright really quick though and I think if anything there's more low cut happening as the Tone is rolled up. The Tone knob at noon is pretty bright, conversely on the Joyo it's pretty dark. I didn't explore every Tone setting from each pedal, also my favorite setting is a bit bright, but there's a lot of useable tone below noon on the OCD that I didn't get into.
Here's another quick sample I made just now. Same format as the previous demo, but just bypass and the OCD, with the Gain at 2 o'clock and the Tone at 10 o'clock, in LP and HP modes. Not a lot of noticeable low end loss really and the Tone can go much darker without the "blanket over the amp" sound the Joyo gets with pretty much anything below noon and some gain. In the room there's no real perceptible low end loss to me, but I haven't tried it at full volume with a big cab yet.
I didn't mention it before, because it lives on my pedalboard, but I had my HPF-Pre running at the start of the chain for both of these.

I recommend this:

Best week ever! Got my teacher certification, got a teaching position, ordered my Neurosis tickets yesterday, found out my wife and I are having a girl, playing in Co Springs w/ JoeVictim tonight (1st show w/ the new backline arrangement), and heading back to NY for xmas tomorrow!

Congrats on the new addition! How far along is your wife?
I'm kinda bummed. That douchebag singer we had tryout a few weeks ago has his old band back together and now I'm starting to get Facebook event invites from him. They're playing with Ancient Warlocks (Darren from Black Hand Analog's band) in Feb. I would have loved to get on that bill. Kind of a kick in the dick.

Jump on the Laz train and run BB + El Oso! They really are a match made in heaven.
Just make sure you have it set up for a Marcus Miller MOOSE CALL!!!
The ODB-3 sounded great last night, we'll see how it compares once my Mole gets here. Whoever was debating on whether or not to order the mod, do it, its a great mod, it's just not what I need for my board. It sounds awesome for guitar, I'll keep it and put it on my guitar side of my pedalboard.

All sorts of positive **** going on with you man! Congrats.

She's 19 weeks! It was a trip, at the 1st ultrasound they told us with 95% certainty that we were having a boy. Yesterday they told us we were the 5%! We were just happy to hear that she is healthy, and now we are rapping our minds around a new surprise! My father-in-law had a great reaction, he asked my wife "Why'd you change it?"
Denver band Native Daughters is opening for Neurosis when they play here. Really "girthy" sound, two drums front and center, bass, two guitars. http://nativedaughters.bandcamp.com/
You could always strike up a conversation with someone in the other band along the lines of "Wow, I'm really glad to hear that you and (singer) were able to let sleeping dogs lie. It sounded like you guys really had to deal with some drama." I've see such tactics used by middle school girls with great success!
It's a trip to hear their heartbeat, huh? I remember when my wife and I found out we were having a boy. I was relieved. She wanted a girl and I was so afraid of having a girl lol.
And I don't think I could say something like that haha. I plan to go to the show to see Ancient Warlocks, but I don't see myself associating with the other dude. Guy's a dick.
I had to cancel practice today. Getting over food poisoning/stomach virus of some kind. Haven't really eaten anything beside a granola bar (this morning) and some crackers (yesterday) since Wednesday. I finally feel like a human bean again, though. Just very tired and reluctant to eat anything. There was no way I could make the drive to practice, let alone play bass for a few hours.
I'm bummed to be missing practice, because I think we're really close to having a set down. I need to spend some time next week woodshedding on a few changes and a particular riff with an odd time signature that isn't coming out as smoothly as it should be. I'm hoping we're booking gigs by the end of January, if not playing out by then.

Rock & roll means well, but it can't help telling young boys lies.
Just got a chance to listen to Corey's clips. Both pedals sound great. I dig both pedals with the gain cranked at the end. The OCD has a slight advantage tonewise (to my liking), but the Joyo isn't far off.
