Speaking of skins and punk and whatnot, where's blendermassacre been? Did he ever give us an update on his elbow situation?

This place is unreal. i havent been to dubai since 1998 and i barely recognize the city. it seriously looks like a scene from star wars.

And i have also heard that stoner rock and doom are trendy right now.

+1 to Nickleback > Linkin Park.

I know a few people who are starting to get into it that previously were only into hardcore, death metal or metalcore, but I doubt many average music listeners have any awareness of these genres. That probably means people who are already obsessive, obscure sub-culture hunters online are starting to be aware of it more regularly. The internet has a way of portraying a severely marginalized and obscure niche sub-genre becoming known by a slightly less marginalized and obscure niche sub-culture as "trendy". The way something trending on reddit or another website could get called "trendy"...which usually means the vast supermajority of humans have no awareness of it.

Makes no difference to me either way. Being able to listen to good music on the radio would be a welcome comeback. Stoner Rock is just contemporary 70s radio rock to my ear, so that would be no huge coup really. Although I doubt Doom Metal, Sludge and the more extreme stuff could ever gain much mainstream traction at all.

Indeed stoner/dessert rock is more popular lately (and to be honest I didn't know much about it a few years ago) and along with it a bit of doom as well. Even "popular" magazines like terrorizer (not sure if you guys have it in the states) are writing more and more about it. This year they released a special doom edition with reviews from wino and matt pike etc, a special edition which usually covers genres like NWOBHM or trash, while 2 years ago they would hardly even name doom bands doom metal (not even sabbath). They even invited electric wizard to headline the fest they promote this year, while in 2009 they were one of the earliest acts in the smallest stage...

Nevertheless, I doubt bands like sunn O)))/earth will ever reach the newfound popularity of bands like sleep or electric wizard

I'm the only person I know at my school (or anywhere) that listens to it. I'm probably the youngest as well

Well it has become sort of in vogue with the hipster crowd as of lately but I still wouldn't consider it mainstream. It has been growing popularity because it's just straight up solid rock and there really isn't anything else out there that comes close.

it definitely has been gaining popularity, but only the stuff that sounds like rock from the 60s and 70s that skipped the tragically bad cocaine trend that ruined music. heavier/darker tunes are about the same, it seems.

It's all relative. I got into stoner rock, doom metal and sludge in the late 90s and tried for over a decade to start a band, but could never find anyone even remotely interested in the same type of music. Quite literally couldn't get any drummer past a first jam session, because they all thought the music was too slow to play to (even Melvins type stuff). To all my friends and musical acquaintances who are younger than me and have been into metalcore for the past decade, I'm like the ancient oracle of heavy music. Now I'm in a doom metal band that originally broke up sometime around 2000 and I'm the youngest guy in the lineup, oldest is 48, and they know about old obscure bands I've never even heard of and have a completely different perspective on the musical context of doom metal, because they had never even heard that genre name when they started playing.

So no matter how long you're into something, you're never going to be the newest or the oldest anyway.

+1. Especially when the old guard and new guard meet. It's like, "Weedeater? why the hell did you record a weedeater? Ever hear of Candlemass...?"
