So those character series pedals sound pretty good through just a power amp? Other than the BSDR sansamp I've never been able to really crank one and see how it sounds.
In my limited experience so far, yes. I have the British (Marshall) and Liverpool (Vox), but I don't use either one for bass really, just guitar. I've heard the Oxford (Orange) and Leeds (Hiwatt) are good for bass, but I haven't tried them yet. When I got the British I tried it out into the power amp in jack of my VTM120 and my GK MB800 with my guitar pedalboard and both sounded good. Tech 21 says pretty explicitly that they're designed to run ideally into a PA/amp, one of their powered cabs or just direct to board/interface for recording. The current plan is to use the Crest with the Tech 21 stuff for my guitar boards and with the Dunwich for bass.
Here, I did a little impromptu jam with the British into the Pro-Lite, into my DIY 1x10. I just did one take of jamming out a bunch of riffs, then edited it into a pseudo-song arrangement with some different beats. I dialed in a slightly gritty tone, with the speaker sim turned off. There's a pic of the pedal setting I used below.
SS/BS TAFM! Brian was kind enough to dress it up with an Awesome lava pic as requested. This thing rocks. And when you are not sonically tearing phonebook in half, it gets dead quiet. Great job Brian!

Very cool, thanks for the clip and description. I'm just curious about them. I've had my eye on the Oxford/Orange model for a while. They seem like fun and versatile little boxes. I think the oxford would be ideal for running into a small mixer and out to headphones or near field monitors. That would be a good-sounding little practice set up for guitar and bass.
After hearing Laz's amp kicking through the dually, if the orange version sounds anything like his orange terror for bass, it's worth every penny .
So... turns out I'm moving. Just up the street. My wife went to look at a place and fell in love with it so I gave it my blessing. Now to pack and hope I still have a spot to play at when I get there. I have this mental image of me fending off my corner filled with music gear with a falcion or other weapon of choice.
I built 3 versions of the same pedal and sent it out to friends for testing. I have since realized that pedal was an essential part of my rig and I sound like crap without it. I thought to myself..."No worries Jeff, you can build yourself a new one with some mods your testers have suggested." Well....no...no I can't. Every attempt has failed. I can't seem to replicate the sound. Uggg....
In other news I picked up a Dynacomp and so far I like it a lot. It may not be permanent in my rig but Ive always wanted one and plan to hold on to it for a while.
I also picked up a legit Bass Driver and I must say that I like the tone more. The Behringer has better dirt and a better level control but when everything is set to noon the Bass Driver sounds much smoother. Now I just need a power amp and 4x18's and I should be straight.

That's always been my beef with the Behringer. It just doesn't sound very smooth. It adds a little oomph, but it's still not a very musical pedal. That said, I'm extremely happy with mine and how it performed when I needed it. Best price to pedal value I own.

Any opinions on Avatar guitar cabs? My guitarist owns Marc Ford's (The Black Crowes) custom built Roccaforte. It only came with a 16 ohm tap, and he has this thing about leaving it original, so he wants to get a 16 ohm cab made. Then he'll have the option of running his V4 with the Matamp, or the Roccaforte with the Avatar.
He said he basically is looking for a pretty transparent cab with clarity, volume and depth. Basically wants the cab to make the Rocca sound like the Rocca, without any coloring from the cab. He's thinking of doing Celestion CL 80s. That puts the cab at 320w and gives plenty of head room. He's not incredibly opinionated on speakers, but knows he's not a fan of V30s.
So, opinions on Avatar cabs, and speaker advice, while keeping in mind he wants to retain the clarity of his amp.
The guitarist in cstvt has an avatar 4x12 and 2x12. They're pretty awesome cabs. He also has more amazing amps and cabs than most people would hope to own. The avatar keeps up with his other high end cabs, plus it's a great workhorse, sounds great and is well built.
Avatar guitar cabs are fantastic. I've known people with pretty much every model and they're all been totally worth the money. The one that looks like an Orange cab is the one that I'd go with. The Celestion Classic Lead 80 is probably what he needs, as far as speakers go.
That Rocca is begging for Greenbacks. How much does Avatar run for a 4x12? You can probably do better on the used market and find and old V4 4x12 or similar that is better built and load speaker in them. Though guitar speakers are usually anything but transparent
