He skept the bottom well for the tenure of CCR's career, I thought he had his highlights though. As for gear I'd guess a p bass and a RIC were no doubt part of his bass arsenal.

I had a long conversation with John Forgety a few years back....he's not letting go of the past, he almost started foaming at the mouth when I mentioned his old rhythm section......I'm not kidding.

| | | | I think it's reasonable to say that what you hear on the CCR records is all the members of CCR, not John Fogerty alone. Fogerty did arrange the songs the way he wanted them though I'm sure. When I was on the road Stu Cook and CCR's drummer was touring in the midwest with Eliot Easton of the Cars in a band called Creedence Clearwater Revisited, playing all the old CCR tunes. |

I seem to recall something about the songs being given to the band, and no one finding out the lyrics until the recordings were finished.

But you show me where it says Stu didn't play the bass on the recordings. Not the same thing.
And you're the one with the burden of proof, not me.

John's one of my all time favorites. He can write, play, and sing very well, and he means it...no superstar syndrome. He's right up there with Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins and Jimi Hendrix in my book.
CCR would never have been without him.
As far as Stu, I never really got off on his playing.

John and the band have managed
to record material that has withstood
the greatest test of all time..
It's ironic John had plans for a solo album "Hoodoo"
that didn't materialize,my screen name is from a line
in the song Born on the Bayou,
{i can still hear my ol' hounddog barkin' chasin' down a
hoodoo there}I agree John is the real deal..

He wrote the hits, he produced the albums, he directed what was played, he was they're meal ticket...I never got the impression that CCR was a group effort, i.e. equal participation in writing and creating. So, you're right, big jump. I stand corrected. Quote:

His stuff never stood out for me in the way other bass player's playing has done but I have to say he's actually been a pretty big influence on me and the way I invent bass lines to chords I have never played before. He uses a lot of standard rhythms, like dotted quarter-eighth-half note, but I use his techniques for moving through changes all the time. This really became apparent to me after not playing any of their stuff for a long time, and then this past year getting into a band that does some fairly simple songs, stuff I never listened to as well as some CCR that I do know, and I'm finding my created bass lines for many of the tunes to be very Stu Cook-esque.
