Sucky pop-punk bassists...getting better (Pete Wentz & Mike Dirnt content)

Sign in to disble this ad
I think these bassists are learning from Rise Against's Joe Principe. (Hey, even though were punk bassists, we can actually do something.) Check out Fall Out Boy's I Don't Care and Green Day's Know Your Enemy. There nothing special, but there better than what they normally do. (With the exception of pre-Dookie Green Day and FOB's Dance, Dance)

For those w/ weak ears (like me):

Mike Dirnt learning from Joe Principe?
Now, that's funny.

Agreed. His lines on the last two albums certainly aren't as busy or melodic as they used to be, but he made a decision to lock it down more and play less notes. American Idiot was so good, it didn't bother me. The new album, not so much.

Imo, I think its more that Dirnt has adopted a less is more approach and is playing more for the song than himself recently...

Mike was always a busy player, but since GD has become more varied in what they do- so has Dirnt. I like Mike- I think he is a fine player who serves his songs (now more than in the past)...

Mike may have gotten a bit more tasteful and subtle or what have you, but his over the top punk excess was what I liked about their older work. Then again, the last album of theirs I paid money for was Kerplunk. I got three songs into NImrod once, and I stopped with the green day thing. Still I hear them bleeding through the radio now and then. Not as Green Dayish, but better musically I would say.

While both of these groups are not pop punk, Pete is probably getting better. But really Mike Dirnt? I say he was perfectly fine before the new album(and I'm not even much of a Green Day fan).

Precisely. Describing any of Mike Dirnt's playing as "sucky" is just flat-out inaccurate.

Just "popular" punk. The stuff that's on the radio, "cleaned up" punk sounding bands who play big arenas and are on TRL. Good tunes, but not punkrock.

Great point.
I think "punk" is more an attitude or a way of doing things than it is a sound or style of music. Johnny Cash was as punk as they come, while the supposedly punk Sex Pistols were the N*Sync of their day.
Hey, speaking of "pop-punk" and Torrance, I was just out your way.. went to hang with a friend in Redondo Beach and see ALL and Big Drill Car in Anaheim, which was an absolutely amazing show. Nice weather you got there!

Dirnt sucks... I believe this thread fails :P

But foreal! Has no one played/heard basket case's bass line? That was my first song, because of the fact it was fun, cool, and stood out the song. I think Mike is fading into GD rather than getting better. He plays the part of a rythm guitard.... oh wait my bad, thats Billy's job from american idiot on

Say what you will about Dirnt, but the bass line in "Longview" pretty much carries that song.

Pop Punk does wierd things for me, I would honestly rate myself as an above average bass player but I still find myself almost exclusively playing in Pop Punk bands and jamming on the root despite the fact I could do more.

I dont know why I just love keeping it simple!

Real punk is the Clash, the Ramones, Fugazi stuff like that. The Sex Pistols played punk music, but the fact that they hired Sid Vicious just because he "looked punk" just shows they they are not punk at all. Just my $0.02

I think there is truth in that but honestly I feel that its more to do with the attitude. Providing your doing what you want to do in your heart, thats punk.
