Surf Music and Surf "BASS."

I grew up with those early guitar instrumentals but NEVER considered it a viable style of music to play. Then I realized, how cool it would sound with the bass as upfront as the guitar.

So I decided to do an update of some of the great surf classics with "lead bass." Now I love it. And it seems it's now what I'm getting known for.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's thought of this. Does anyone else know of bands doing surf/melodic/intro music where the bass takes on a more commanding role?

It's a good idea and some of it comes off well. Other places it sounds like the bass and guitar are fighting for control instead of working together.

LOL...What that I grew up with older surfers from the 60's that liked that kind of music and I dig that the bass is louder and more prominent in the youtube videos???

Sorry, when I was just glancing through the threads, this is what came to mind as I scanned the title of this one:

I love it...have you tried the Seymour Duncan antiquity II J-bass pups? they are designed for surf guitar music. Sounds a bit like you've got 'em.

Fair enough. That's going to happen when the bass is up front but it creates a sort of tension which works in the style IMO. I tried to get it that they complimented each other though.

Specifics are welcome. The great thing about home recording is that even after it's been released, it's still always open to re-mixing!

Side bar: I wonder how the original bass tracks would sound if they were moved higher in the mix?

Funny you should say that because I'm building a bass now and ordered those pu's for it.

But on the CD it's either a 1986 62' reissue P, a Squier classic Vibe J or a Squier J Deluxe. All stock.
