Anybody a big fan of this genre? I've been learning songs for the last couple of weeks and I'd love to start a band. Ron Eglit, Nokie Edwards/Bob Bogle, man these guys knew what a groove was.

There's a lot of good "new" stuff out there: Pollo Del Mar, The Penetrators, The Surfcoasters (Japanese), Insect Surfers, Slacktone (incredible stuff), The Mermen (wild--must see live), etc.
I saw Dick Dale back in 2002 or so. Unbelievable show.
A P
p.s. Check archive.org's totally legal music section for a ton of Mermen live shows. Allen Whitman plays several different basses all through an SVT and fridge (w/extra 1x15 at times). Their live shows get pretty dang loud.

While the bass players were adept at holding down the groove with simple lines, they unfortunately were overshadowed by some great guitar players like Dick Dale and Duane Eddy.
By the way, to illustrate what a nut I am for Surf Music, I spent years (literally) looking for a book called "Surf City: The California Sound" by Jack Wood (who by the way is a bass player). It was published in 1995 and had a page or two on all the California Surf bands and a partial discography. It came with a CD of the bands' music too. It had these really gnarly photos throughout.
It doesn't have a cover price on it, but it probably sold for maybe $9.95 new with the CD. I think I paid something like $25 on eBay for it. That's how desperate I was to own it. 72 pages worth of cool Surf Rock!

I've done a couple of shows in front of those guy's. Big fun... They aren't strictly a surf band in the Dick Dale/Ventures sense but they prey on the same audience. They are a really fun band live.
Find a song called 'The Herse' maybe from The Water Dogs ? That's a nice under played surf tune.
