Sweet Comfort Band

Those of you who were involved with (or just listened to) contemporary Christian music during the '70s probably remember Sweet Comfort Band. I remember really liking their sound, which was sort of jammy pop/rock with some jazz and R&B overtones -- and a phenomenal singer out front, Bryan Duncan -- before it drifted into some other directions near the end of their run, in '84.

At any rate, I was going down CCM memory lane recently, and I read on Bryan Duncan's web site that the Sweet Comfort Band is reuniting, for the first time since their 2001 reunion shows. They're in the studio and putting together new music. Sadly, bassist Kevin Thomson, who essentially started the band with his brother Rick (drums) passed away earlier this year after being sick for quite a long time.

More info here - http://www.sweetcomfort.com/home.html

Good example of their sound here - this track sounds a bit to me like mid-period Chicago or maybe even Earth Wind & Fire - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3x7Myegr24

And a vintage clip with the band in concert - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJWwcRYT1p4

Kevin is playing an Alembic here, I think - and his sound is really punchy despite the kinda' crummy audio mix. I read that he had previously played a Gibson SG.

The guitarist is Randy Thomas, who went on to play with the band Allies (I didn't really follow them), did Nashville session work and co-wrote the hit "Butterfly Kisses."

There was really a wealth of talent in that band; hope I'll get to see them if/when they tour.

Sorry to hear about Kevin Thomas he was definitely one of the better bassist in early Christian Rock. And SCB was certainly one of the more talented groups of the genre. They're early stuff (mid to late 70's) had a great R & B vibe to it. Unfortunately like most Christian Bands in the 80's they suffered from an identity crisis. Were they an EW & F styled band or a hair band? Literally they have tunes on the later CD's that could go for a Journey tunes, and Gino Vanelli type tunes on the same CD. It would still be cool to see especially some of the old tunes done live again. Duncan still has some of the best pipes around.

I was a big SCB fan back in the early 80's when that whole CCM scene exploded nationwide. I didn't know that Kevin had passed. Thanks for sharing. I hope that this new SCB sticks around a while.

Yeah, after the jazzy rock/R&B and Chicago/EWF period they did sort of drift into stuff that seemed purely aimed at cross-over radio play, which they never really got. I have high hopes for SCB 2.0, but I must admit that some of Bryan Duncan's solo stuff is a little bit too "smooth jazz" for my tastes. But the guy can sing, big time, and his voice apparently is still in great shape.
