Yea the ''No Promiscuous Sex'' part of Straight Edge is a major point. Its hard to define "Promiscuous Sex" but the basic idea behind it is taking responsibility for your actions by minimizing harm to yourself and others. Therefore do your best not to contract an STI or STD, think carefully and make sure you care about the person, and Don't force your partner to get rid of any unwanted children ect. Ian Mackaye simply said DON'T F***. he was far from celebrate.

In short if your Straight Edge THINK FOR YOUR SELF, TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS,

Yea na Cobain was a reasonably decent guy and pretty anti-mainstream by all accounts. Nirvana's almost more ''Pop-Punk" but that's cause it became hugely famous without intending to, and its song structure was modeled on the Beatles + Kurts singing voice amazing. Krist Novasalic obviously greatly loved his friend and enjoyed working with him which tells you something, although he mostly copied Kurt's guitar riffs. I duno I don't like to pass judgment on great musicians.

I'm not sXe but I support your ideals. My younger brother doesn't claim edge because of most of the people around these parts who are edge being either very disrespectful of everyone elses ideals (slander, intolerence, at times violence) or they flip flop and don't hold true to themselves. It seems in my time within this scene around here there are far and few inbetween who hold true, and those who do deserve respect. So he doesn't imbibe, doesn't sleep around, and takes no drug. I totally look up to him for his choices and his ideals and the fact that he rejects the monicre (sXe) due the abuse by many around here (Yes, many do abuse the fact that they are sXe). Some may say he should wear such as proudly, but in many ways what it's degraded to around here, he'd rather not be associated with that and let it just live inside of him... rightfully so.

Nothing but respect for those of you who are true to yourselves and really do believe. It's a wonderful thing as too many abuse substance and let it ruin their lives.

More power to you all.

-Benny

(p.s. I don't want to de-rail the thread, but what are your thoughts of naturally occuring substances in nature... I'm not talking drugs. I'm speaking of substances that occur in nature, as there are many altering substances that are placed into our water that change our perceptions as well. Feel free to PM me as I'd like some healthy discussion about such things... and just so you know, it would be good clean chat with an open mind.)

Hi Benny
Cheers for your thoughts and kudos to your brother for being so awesomely true to himself. I've struggled with my own intolerance for people who abuse substances, but thankfully have yet to resort to violence. These so-called Straight-Edgers have missed the whole point of thinking for yourself, I mean if it was up to the founders Minor Threat, the movement wouldn't exists. Hopefully its just a minority within the greater Straight-Edge who resort to this sort of B.S. You get that anywhere I suppose.

I'm not actually an American like the majority of users of this site, but am from rural New Zealand where Punk counter-culture is non-existent amongst a populous of redneck rugby-loving beer drinking farm boys, or pot smoking hippies. Peer pressure is so strong, most of my close mates do weed.

Your point about naturally occurring substances is a good one, but at the end of the day you can't be too precious, just be mindful of what your consuming and ensure your water supply isn't contaminated.

Cheers

from a young age i watched other band mates get stupid while drunk and high, get busted for underage consumption, and even have their best friend fall out of a pickup truck on the way home from the bar, turning him mentally into a 6 year old. It never appealed to me. I smoked cigs but quit when i was 19. I never drank or did drugs.

When i joined an old school posi hardcore band in the early 2000s i felt "at home" because no one else in the band drank or did drugs, with the exception of the fill in drummers but they kept it low key. For once i wasn't the only person who could drive the van back after a show, who wasn't making mistakes playing because they were wasted, and who wasn't closing down the bar at 2am and going "wait, just ONE more drink!"

It wasn't until a few years ago, long after i had left the sxe band, that i realized what i had been a part of. I mean, i knew that shows we went to had crews who came out and supported us, and on more than several occasions shows turned violent, with one having a stabbing. One night in Detroit changed my mind on sxe for good- i was chatting with a guy who came out to see my current band, and we got to talking about my old band. Here this guy had been stomped almost to death by the crew that came out to see us that night (a detroit local crew) because someone thought he looked at them the wrong way. I was instantly ashamed. With my current band we occasionally played shows where the hardliner crews would show up and there was always a fight and the club always got closed down. It's just stupid now.

While i still do not drink or do drugs i never use the term straight edge when describing my lifestyle. Too many people immediately think of the hardliners and i don't want to be a part of that.

If you're interested in my old sxe band, look up Run Devil Run from Cleveland on Victory Records. It's fast old school like GB, YOT, and Cro-Mags with lots of breakdowns. Pretty formulaic but some really great songs.

Not to get all philosophical, and if this needs to be moved to the lobby or something feel free, but why do straightedge people consider sex/drugs/booze a bad thing? Honestly just curious.

Its kind of a non-conformity thing, but what turned me off of that stuff the most was seeing people who are completly fried from drugs or alcohal abuse (example: HR of Bad Brains)

It seems to me, that by organizing into one large group, you're actually becoming the thing that you dislike, which is the mainstream.

Not trying to offend anyone, just pointing it out.

i distrust sXers because more often than not they refuse to have fun until someone makes a big deal out of them being sXe. I respect the choice, I don't respect the "image".

live above the influence, stop caring what people think.

Well personally i dont only associate myself with other edge kids because its my commitment and if its not yours, it doesnt really matter IMO. I hang out with my buddys from my hxc punk band and they drink 24/7, its just not a temptation for me, i just like hanging out and having fun. And to gearheadbassman, i think thats an unfair judgement. Its just kind of stereo-typing IMO.

for me? rough up-bringing. the town im from is loaded with drunkards. my parents.. my grandpa.

drugs.. the idea that im not 100% in control of myself is bothersome. i can see how some people could be into that.. and i consider it to be a weakness. theres nothing wrong with my normal state of mind.. i dont need some chemical reaction ****ing with me. ive got it under control.

nothing wrong with sex.. hell.. i love it. but its always with someone im committed to. i have enough respect for my body not to put my dude in places it shouldnt go.

it all just made sense to me. i went by all of these guidelines for years before claiming edge. i had made up my mind what i was and was not going to do when i was in jr high and i stuck with it. finding a culture of people that followed guidelines that i consider to be common sense was pretty sweet. i enjoy some of the music. i like the support and the brotherly feel to it all. not all the gang BS. i dont have a religion, so to have a loose congregation of like-minded people can be a good feeling without the eternal damnation or supreme lord.

I hate these threads but I always seem to have to post in them, they just wind me up.

Right...you're all f*%kin' nuts.

Black x's are marked on any underage gig goer - its not a punk thing, 'cos before that it was a 'soul thing' and also a 'jazz thing' before that. It's a result of being able to go in to a club at 18 and not being able to drink unitl 21.
So you just go ahead and pick your cool.

Hard Liners - where I come from these are known as Idiots, drugs or no drugs, if you go out and fight for the sake of fighting, you're a dick...please, lets not give them their own little name...unless its Dick. They're idiots. I'd rather my troublemakers pissed-up or high as a kite, 'coz at least theres a reason for it.

Straight edgers - These are known as the people most likely to end up disillusioned with the world - wondering why its so ****ed up - you'll soon realise that making your own mistakes is the only way to learn and have fun, and that other peoples experiences cannot lead you in life - its a bit like a religion of Athiests. We'll all follow the word of....hmm...Dave!

By coming on here and telling happy, life loving people about the 'bad things' drugs can do to you...mmkay...without having tried and tested them yourself is a bit like copying text out of a book. Well done.

Also, I don't feel the need to come on here and start threads that ask if there are other bassists like me that like to fire up a reefer here and there, and maybe a have drink after a show. I know there are. And they seem human to me.

You just seem to want to tell everybody about your straight-edgedness. Its the same on other forums and you all say the same stuff, but I've never leapt out of a moving car, or thought I could fly or even thought I could play better off my head. I don't drink and drive, I can think straight and work 40 hours a week, and in my 32 years on this planet I have never ever thrown a fist at another human being whilst under the influence of anything. Stoned not stupid.

Whilst claiming your independence and non-comformity from todays 'stuggling youth', you all feel the need to congregate together and be part of teh same group. Hence this thread, i imagine.
Also I think that I read that there are gangs of 'Straight-edgers and Hardliners' scrapping at gigs.
This is what drunk & high people do, but they have a reason. Not a good one mind, but a reason nontheless.
Do a little reading in to the history of the Bloods and the Crips at gigs in L.A. - you'll see some similarities.

Essentially, I don't care if you do drugs or are clean as a whistle...seriously good for you, thats some solid will-power.
Just stop shoving it in my face like you're floating 2 feet off the floor. This 'aint the rapture... you just made a choice.

And on that note...

I'M GOING FOR A PISS.
Just thought you all should know I made a decision.

Woah...that came out venemous.

Haha i love this thread... I love all of you!

While i put myself down in here as "sXe", i have been labled by other people arround here as a "closet straightedge". I'm 26 and i don't smoke/drink/shot/snort/promiscify anything or anyone but RARELY use the label unless i'm too lazy to say "i don't X, i don't X, i don't x...."

In all truth... about 90% of the straightedge people i know are complete %$$@$. It's usually over-privilaged white suburban types that need something to be a part of to validify themselves. Now, i said USUALLY not always. These days its all about crappy metal-core with crappy breakdowns and kids ninja kicking themselves whilst beating on people that don't share their same views.

I came into the "edge" scene in the mid/early 90's via the punk scene. I first got into bands like Minor Threat, SSD, Uniform Choice, SOA, Youth Brigade, 7seconds... and from there it was hhella rad bands like Limp Wrist, Life's Halt, What Happens Next?, Vitamin X, Tear It Up, Armed With Intellegence(now I Object) and so on... So even though i and all of these bands believe in a straightedge lifestyle... i can't really get down with the whole metal-core thing or youth-crew thing(well... MOST youth crew stuff... some's fun). Even back in the day i hated Earth Crisis and Strife as well as Youth Of Today and Gorilla Biscuits.

I can TOTALLY see why people have negative views on straightedge kids. I know i stoped associating with other "edge" kids when i witnessed a band in Detroit stomp a kid and fish-hook his earplugs out as punishment for "breaking edge"... all while playing... and being cheered on... LAME!

For those of you that ask us WHY we abstain... why do YOU partake? You say things like "makes us feel good and have a good time".. well... same goes for me at least. I have fun with everyone and fun is really a relative thing to begin with anyways...

OH! and one more gripe... It really irks me that the whole christianity thing got caught up with straightedge as well... "This Ain't No Cross On My Hand"!

Anyways... I think as necessisary Straight Edge education EVERYONE should procure a copy of the wonderfully amizing/horrible move "The Edge Of Quarrell". It's about punks and straight edge kids fighting eachother in Seattle around 2000 and is ALL kinds of win... Main character: Rocky Votolato!! Head sXe'r: John freakin' Pettibone(Undertow and... ugh... Himsa), Head Punk: uh.. whatever the guitarist from Murder City Devils' name is... it has awesome scenes that take place durring shows by Trial, Botch and MCD... its awesome and just shows how silly everyone is on both sides of the coin when they take themselves way too seriously.
