Tal Wilkenfeld on (2) Herbie Hancock Tracks

Sign in to disble this ad
Herbie Hancock's new album The Imagine Project features Tal on covers of Peter Gabriel's 'Don't Give Up' and Sam Cooke's 'A Change is Gonna Come.' I'm impressed with how Tal's playing consistently gets better over time.

'A Change is Gonna Come' displays a maturity, sensitivity and sophistication beyond her years. There's a wonderful lydian lick she lays down as a response to a Herbie line.

Her tone (no doubt a large part due to her touch) is modern in the sense that it's full range, but without any annoying active electronics artifacts.

Kudos!

I don't know what day it starts and ends, but there is a one week free streaming "preview" of the entire album (and each individual track) available from a link found on the following NPR page: http://www.npr.org/blogs/ablogsuprem...roups-and-pink

I really like the track with Derek Trucks and his wife, and the track with the female vocalist doing Dylan's Times They Are A Changin'. I hope that's the track that Tal has been singing live (as someone mentioned in another thread in this forum), as its a vocal highlight on the album.

I like the "Don't Give Up Cover" in general but the Tony Levin bass line really can't be improved upon or changed without losing something. Still, it's nice.

Really? I'm a Tony Levin fan, but one of the things I LIKE about that cover is the tone and playing of the bass. Can anyone confirm or deny that its Tal? The guitar part IS Jeff Beck - he's employing a tone reminiscent of his Emotion & Commotion album, and I know Vinny & Tal accompanied Jeff when he did the sessions.

I saw Tal with Herbie last Tues night. Not only did she play a very nice bass part on "A Change is Gonna Come", but also sang lead on it. Nice set of pipes as well. I'm a fan...

I didn't say there was anything wrong with the tone or playing but the Levin part just can't be beat. It's a very nice version.

Are you SURE it was A Change Is Gonna Come (the Sam Cook song), and not The Times They Are A Changin'??? I know she only sang one of the two, but I've read two reports that it was the Cook song, and two reports that it was the Dylan song.

Before I forget..... Make sure you set up your DVR's for tomorrow night's Jimmy Fallon show. Herbie Hancock is scheduled to perform - I hope Tal sings one of those songs (or both )

No singing for Tal on Jimmy Fallon tonight - Harbie sat in with The Roots and then performed "Imagine". However, the Director must be like everyone else because she got some *major* face-time during the song - easily the most of the baking band (not counting Herbie and the Female & Male vocalists).

Tal was low in the TV mix.
But she, and Vinnie were rocking it hard.

i didn't care for the vocals, but the band was killin all around. Tal's parts were super tasty! though he's always a monster, i thought Vinnie's fills were kind of predictable.

You are correct. Tal sang "Times They are a Changin", and Greg Phillinganes sang "A Change is Gonna Come". (thinking before typing )

Question WHO IS SHE?

Hello I'm not a frequenter of Fallon's show or knowledgeable about jazz but when I hear something I really latch on. I ran across Imagine near the son'g conclusion. Would someone please tell me the woman's name who sang lead? I did love her vocals especially. Fallon didn't announce her. Hancock didn't mention her once the song ended. On the album she definitely is not the opening voice on the cut. I definitely don't think she's part of the Roots. I see some on blogs saying it was Arie, well I know that's not the case. Someone please WHO IS SHE?

Just watched 'Imagine.' Yeah, Tal sounds great, but it was all about Herbie and Vinnie, both of whom sound great. Can't believe Herbie's 70 years old...time flies.

Thanks for posting this... STUNNINGLY good. Just ordered the CD. Love Herbie's Joni CD also.... always kind of chuckle when listening to the Tina Turner cut... that shouldn't work, but god it works!
