Talent Deserving Wider Recognition

Sign in to disble this ad
In Down Beat's Critics Poll, there is a Talent Deserving Wider Recognition category. It serves to recognize talented musicians more people should be aware of.
Let's try this on TB: List one (or more) bassists that you feel deserve wider recognition with website/Myspace/or Youtube links. One of my favorite feelings is when I find a great new player or great new music
Here's two to start
Doug Johns
www.dougjohns.com
www.myspace.com/dougjohns
and
Evan Marien

www.myspace.com/evanmarien
C'mon, share with the class!

I'm willing to bet more people (bass players) know about Doug Johns than you think. It's kinda tough for a solo bassist to gain mass appeal outside of bass player circles though and that goes for many solo bassists!

You're probably right, but to some of my students he was a name with no music attached. Got someone to post?

Fima Eprhon

His lone solo debut album is great...same goes for the Torsos/Fuse/Medeski & The Hasidic New Wave.
...& it blows my mind that the early Lost Tribe albums were on Windham Hill Jazz.

Yeah I do........Jeremie Coke of the band, Electro Deluxe (out of France). Killer bassist!

Also Sekou Bunch, Peter Muller, Scott Ambush & Jerry Brooks are just a few names many folks have never heard of.

Finn Guttormsen, from the Norwegian band Farmers Market.

They play... well, what don't they play. All I know is, this guy is a monster player.
Take a gander at their myspace, http://www.myspace.com/farmersmarkettheband. You can also watch an entire concert of Farmers Market, coupled with the national broadcasting orchestra ("Kork") here: http://www1.nrk.no/nett-tv/klipp/457318 (it may be exclusive for Norwegian internets connections)

I've been doing my best to pimp them every chance I can, but it still seems like I'm about the only one who has heard of them.

Two guys come to mind right off the top.

After listening to Liminal I think Adam Nitti's should be a lot more common among players

The other one is YOU, Roy Vogt, can play and write with the best of them. I reviewed Urban Legend here if anyone wants to check it out.

+1 for you, my brutha Roy!

also, julie slick, although she's starting to get wider recognition now, should be a superstar if you ask me. she's edgy, got chops to spare, and she's a real sweetheart who i think doesn't even realize how great she is. check out her stuff with the adrian belew power trio if you get a chance.

Jonathon Maron (Groove Collective) isn't mentioned all that often and I love his vibe. He also is proof that equipment doesn't define the player, the player defines the equipment.

while we're at it, i think tim marks should be on that list as well. ok, i'm not a big fan of taylor swift, but the music's solid and tim does a great job. but since that album just got 4 grammys, maybe he no longer qualifies
