| | | | Talented Christian bassists in P&W setting? - non funk/gospel Does anyone have some recommendations of bassists that play typical praise/worship music (e.g. simple chord progressions, I IV VI V) but are really talented/creative with their lines?
Whenever there's a post about Christian bassists, names like Sharay Reed and Abe Laboriel get thrown around, but for most churches playing the typical CCLI type songs or Hillsong/Jesus Culture, there's isn't much room for many elements from funk/gospel.
I've got a good music library but would like to find more players who are groovy/melodic with the typical Christian chord progressions. Players that come to mind include Jason Upton's bass player, Gary Lunn on Kevin Prosch's Palanquin, Paul Baloche's bass player on Open the Eyes of my Heart, and Charlie Hall's bass player.
Any more that I should be listening to? |

very tasty especially second verse.
Honestly there are a lot of great players that play praise and worship. You would never know it by listening to them. We have a guy at our church who taught bass performance in college for some time. On a Sunday morning, you would obviously know he's pretty good. Go to the local jazz club and watch him on an upright and you'll just be blown away. |

| | | muljoe -- that's awesome. I'm a new fan of Jared Anderson now. Don Harris' playing is great... I noticed he's playing a PJ5 Lull. |

| | | | I'll name songs/bands that I like instead of the bassist....it will point you even more clearly to where I'm coming from.
Hillsong United-Salvation Is Here, Tell The World, The Time Has Come, Lead Me To The Cross, and many others.
Delirious-Majesty (Here I Am), Rain Down
Casting Crowns-To Know You, Glorious Day/Living He Loved Me (studio/album version, not the radio version), What This World Needs, Prodigal
Tommy Walker-Only A God Like You
Chris Tomlin-How Great Is Our God, Holy Is The Lord, Let God Arise, Awesome Is The Lord Most High
Rush Of Fools-Undo
Lincoln Brewster-Reaching For You, Salvation Is Here
New Life Worship-Here In Your Presence
Listen closely to the bass lines on these songs. Because of the context of the music, most of these don't have in your face type bass lines....but, there are some very interesting things going on, if you listen closely. |

I subscribed to Norm Stockton's Art of Groove website for a month though -- amazing content. Worth the subscription! |

Also Don Harris (agree with muljoe)!! Also you could check out "Deluge" (Jonathan Stockstill) and their bass player... |

? | Abe Laboriel is most famously linked with Ron Kenoly in a gospel setting when not playing with his own group or partnering with Justo Almiro. A lot of his/their work can be found in playing versions of the CCM top 100. But i admit he does take it to another level.
