Too much humility can be just as bad as too much ego. As with most things one should try to achieve a balance. I play bass to make myself happy, as long as I keep playing I will keep improving, it's and open ended system. There is always more to learn, are always ways to improve. I try not to grade myself in a quantitative fashion or compare myself to others. I am me, I play bass, playing bass is my main form of creative expression. For me everything else is irrelevant. |

With the harder sound of metal and rock, you might want to try something with a less treblish tone (try some nickel plated steels on something with lots of room) and make sure your eq is nice and thick, not thin. Of course you'll want to watch your clip light as well lol
Give it a shot, if nothing else you can do it for the reason i learned other techniques that I don't use...follows a principle i learned as child watching the movie Hook:
Peter: *grabs silverware to eat with*
Lost boy 1: No no no, we don't use them
Peter: ...then why do you have them?
Lost boy 2: We have them, so we don't HAVE to use them
I think you get my point lol |

I try to maintain an aura of confidence when I am at a gig or playing engagement. I'm not a pro by any means but I have been asked by people I have played with if I'm a professional session player and that's not because of my playing (I don't think I'm THAT good) but more because of the overall way I conduct myself at the gig.
I have fun and enjoy playing but I also like to be professional about it whether I'm playing for free or for $1,000. The right attitude can make a huge difference in the way people will perceive you as a player. And with the right attitude you can land more gig opportunities even if you are not necessarily the best player available. |

Being good is what's all about to alot of musicians and unfortunatly so many mid level bassits who can play "Money" or "Roxanne" (not ripping on the songs at all, just making a point) get an ego the size of their basses and they rely on it to comfort themselves when they hear better bass players.

There's no need to impose your own ego on others even if they do get on your nerves. I don't care for Pete Wentz's playing but it's not my business, so I don't complain.

If one is in a higher level and has more wisdom, he'll probably just let it pass as some kids being kids. At least that what my parents taught me.
I would like to only fight back if it's a physical assault altogether, but, otherwise, talk is cheap. At least that's what I plan to do. Hell knows how will I react if I'm in that situation LOL.
