Talkbass james jamerson tribute.

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok guys, i was just sitting here admiring some of the greats and i came up with a great idea! Why don't we have a James Jameson tribute!

So Iv decided on a fun thing for some talkbassers to do. Lets honor the memory of the man that inspired us all!

Starting august 15th ill be hosting a 1 month challenge (ending September 15th)

How it works.
Pick your favorite Jamerson tune that you want to play and post it in this thread. :edit the same song may now be picked more than once

Make a video of yourself playing the song you choose, and post the link by midnight September 15th.

Ill try to add some prizes mostly from the talkbass store, but as I'm a poor college student there wont be many lol.

This is your interpretation, or you can do JJ style if you like
MP3 files also welcome!
please try to have the audio file sinked with your playing. If not possible thats ok!!

its free to enter! So have fun!!

Long live the name of James Jamerson and God bless
- Neal

I would if I could play funk, I can't hold a groove at all. LOL. I play Chris Squire style, counter melodic bass.

Might be wise to establish some more ground rules...

1: Is the original track to be audible? (Like so many Youtube demos) If so, are there likely to be any copyright infringement issues? A solo bass line is going to be odd.

2: I have no video capabilities, but uploading an MP3 isn't an issue.

3: Mimicry or "interpretation"? TBH I don't see the point in slavishly copying (unless it's a tune that's defined by the bass e.g. 'My Girl'), so would favour putting your own spin on the original. I'd like to hear a Chris Squire, souped-up Rick 'counter-melodic' take on one of these.

4: Is there a Master List of known JJ recordings? All I've found is this one: http://www.bassland.net/jamersonhits.htm - which is partial, but probably sufficient.

5: I bagsy Jr. Walker & The All-Stars' "Roadrunner". 'ands orf!

Pete.

After my last post, I have a plan. I want to do an entire song "The Fish" style, just bass overdubs for everything. That means I can get my wah pedal, my flanger, my phaser, AND my distortion! All I have to do is pick one.
