Ted Nugent's Bass Player

Hi guys I ´ve been listening a lot of Ted nugent´s work (Specially his first records) and I´m amazed with Rob Grange´s playing style. I mean that solo on stranglehold is to die for, the bass line on stormtroopin and many more. I just wanted to know what do you guys think about this guy.

I learned my 3 finger right hand technique by watching Rob Grange in my formative years. He was a machine...in a good way. I also learned a lot about laying it down for a trio from him.

Rob Grange is underrated and rarely mentioned. Ted eclipsed all the players in his first solo band. They were fantastic.

Agree that the bass on "Stranglehold" is great. That band had some really good players. But both Grange and Derek St. Holmes (2nd guitarist, lead vocalist on "Strangehold", "Hey Baby" and others) quit after a while, mainly because of Ted's inability to share the spotlight or show appreciation. Lots of metalheads STILL don't realize that Ted didn't sing all those songs.

Yeah it´s really sad that Ted didn´t allowed the others to shine, but Imagine what they could have done if he´d let them. Really great musicians. Anybody has more info on Rob Grange? Website, other recordings, bands, something like that.

Grange was with the Amboy Dukes before Nugent hit it big.
After leaving Nuge, Grange and St. Holmes formed a band called "St. Paradise", but their records didn't sell and are probably out of print now. Don't know what happened to him after that.

I was really into the first three Nugent solo albums when I started playing bass, those were the first songs I learned. Very underrated players. St. Paradise re-did Live It Up from the Cat Scratch Fever album and it was much better as I recall.

Rob Grange didn't play with the original Amboy Dukes - he started around when Andy Solomon left and Ted went to a power trio-this would be around '71 or '72. He called that band the Dukes for a while, but then it was just Ted Nugent.

I grew up in Toledo, so those guys were playing around constantly.

Greg Arama was on the Journey record and the follow-ups...Rob Ruzga was on the Live at the Eastowne record...then it was Grange after that.

I think he's selling real estate in San Diego. No idea whether he's involved with music anymore.

+1
You have to be a machine to play that!
You would have to be a Rock-n-rolling machine to keep up with the motorcity madman.

There is some vintage footage on "Full bluntal Nugitity" that was really cool. I'm not sure who was playing but I do remember them playing a Gibson Ripper. Good Stuff.

Hard to imagine, since Ted is ordinarily such a down-to-earth and friendly guy.

I love that whole "droning octave" thing on Stranglehold, that makes it sound like some phase effect or something. We were covering that last summer, with my wife on bass, and I said, "man, that doesn't sound right," and then after listening, had my Homer Simpson "D'oh!" moment. When I showed her what he was playing, at first she didn't believe me!
