A lot of the Aretha stuff he did was awesome too. I'm just discovering Tommy and have been very impressed. Where's the love for this great bass player?
Edit* For the uninitiated - Kentucky Rain

While it's extremely simple, Tommy's playing on Aretha's version of Drown In My Own Tears knocks me out. His first few notes, before the drums enter, completely set the groove with ultimate authority and a minimum of effort. It's the epitome of soul. In my dreams I can play like that.
Take a listen: http://bit.ly/b2hvy9 |

My favorite Cogbill line is a toss-up between "Son Of A Preacher Man" by Dusty Springfield, and "Chain of Fools" from Aretha. I just picked up a remastered version of "Lady Soul", with an alternate edit of "Chain of Fools". Very tasty stuff through out, including that great simple line on "Natural Woman".

I am embarrassed to say that before reading this thread I did not know who played bass on those tracks. Thanks for the education! |

| | | All of "Dusty in Memphis" and all of "Lady Soul". Tommy played with a guitar pick I'm told. I need to get that new version of "LadySoul". |

It's got the whole original release remastered, plus an unedited version of "Chain Of Fools", and the mono single releases of "Natural Woman", "Since You've Been Gone", and "Ain't No Way".
I know he played guitar (according to Jerry Jemmmot, Tommy played guitar on Aretha's "think"), the only photos I've seen of him playing bass show him playing with his fingers.

I happened to acquire "Dusty in Memphis" recently and was completely floored by the bass playing, which lead me to Wiki, which lead me here.
Those tracks just groove. Amazing playing.

| | | | Yes...aside from his terrific bass work, Cogbills guitar overdub on Arethas "Think" is as funky as it gets. Story is that Tommy asked Jerry Wexler if he could go back and lay down a guitar line after the track was finished and Wexler (and Aretha) agreed. Thats some nasty pickin there. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
