Tell me your favorite Tommy Cogbill bass line

Sign in to disble this ad
I think mine may be Kentucky Rain from Elvis in 1970.

A lot of the Aretha stuff he did was awesome too. I'm just discovering Tommy and have been very impressed. Where's the love for this great bass player?

Edit* For the uninitiated - Kentucky Rain

I just finished reading Matt Dobkin's book I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You: Aretha Franklin, Respect, and the Making of a Soul Music Masterpiece (http://amzn.to/aJ5grN ), so I've been listening to that album a lot lately.

While it's extremely simple, Tommy's playing on Aretha's version of Drown In My Own Tears knocks me out. His first few notes, before the drums enter, completely set the groove with ultimate authority and a minimum of effort. It's the epitome of soul. In my dreams I can play like that.

Take a listen: http://bit.ly/b2hvy9

Thanks for the heads up on that book!

Didn't he play on Aretha's version of "The Weight"? A little Duane Allman action there too.

David Hood was the bassist on The Weight.

Um, no that was Jerry Jemmott with Duane...

My favorite Cogbill line is a toss-up between "Son Of A Preacher Man" by Dusty Springfield, and "Chain of Fools" from Aretha. I just picked up a remastered version of "Lady Soul", with an alternate edit of "Chain of Fools". Very tasty stuff through out, including that great simple line on "Natural Woman".

In my band we play a lot of Aretha, Wilson Pickett and we also play Preacher Man. All great bass lines. I am embarrassed to say that before reading this thread I did not know who played bass on those tracks. Thanks for the education!

"Since You've Been Gone" from Aretha Franklin. I love playing that bass line.

Check out this site if you haven't already. It's like striking oil for a bass player:

All of "Dusty in Memphis" and all of "Lady Soul". Tommy played with a guitar pick I'm told. I need to get that new version of "LadySoul".

I got mine at Barnes & Noble's clearance rack for six bucks. Rhino's Atlantic & ATCO Remasters #R2 71933. It's got the whole original release remastered, plus an unedited version of "Chain Of Fools", and the mono single releases of "Natural Woman", "Since You've Been Gone", and "Ain't No Way".

I know he played guitar (according to Jerry Jemmmot, Tommy played guitar on Aretha's "think"), the only photos I've seen of him playing bass show him playing with his fingers.

John
