Thaddeus Tribbett

Sign in to disble this ad
I mainly play Gospel these days, but I come from a secular funk & r&b background. I always attended church, but I was raised in conservative churches that did not have full bands, therefore, I am still somewhat of a gospel newbie.

I had seen Thaddeus Tribbett, and I knew he could play some sick fills from stuff I had seen on Youtube but the one Tye Tribbett/GA cd I had bought this year, did not impress me basswise. It was more about beats and keyboard. That changed this weekend. Down in Arkansas, I happened to pick up their 2004 CD, Life. It is far and away the funkiest Gospel I have ever heard. This CD really makes me think of D'Angelo's Voodoo except it has sacred subject matter. Many of the tunes feature a slow, behind the beat, groove, with incredibly funky bass that maintains the groove, but plenty of ad libs to keep it interesting. All in all, on Life, Thaddeus Tribbett plays the funkiest bass I have ever heard in a sacred context. I know Gouche, Hammond, and so many others jam like crazy, but Thaddeus Tribbett is is stank funky like a James Brown record, which is something I haven't heard much of in gospel.

Finally, Thaddeus Tribbett deserves serious love because he is far and away the baddest four string bassist in a genre where even five is often not seen as enough.

Here is some over the top live playing:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSTPKPk6P1I

Compare the live playing to the funk on "Superstar" from Life:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_q5BiecIRB8

Oh yeah-Thaddeus is no joke!!! Andrew Gouche spoke very highly of him in his Bass Player interview and at Bass Player Live 2009.

You can also hear him on Jill Scott's first live album. Keep in mind, he's playing a Cort on that album!

I guess hes another one of those that if you're a gospel cat, you just know about already, which is my assumption as to why hes just being mentioned (TMK). A remember talking to Gouche' and he said Thaddeus was one of the most creative cats hes heard in a long while. Life is one of my fav CD's actually.

Dr. Cheese you need to peep Fred Hammond's live DVD "Free To Worship". Snoop Evans CRUSHES on that DVD. Fred always has good music to me, but his DVD's far surpass the studio work. Also, I know you a funk, groove dude as am I, so trust me on this lol.

They were at our church earlier this year and I offered him a choice of cabs to play out of. I have my Ampeg SVT4Pro/HFL410 which I use for every service but I also had my Carvin B1500/Eden 410 and another Ampeg rig . Thad said he'd use whatever's there it made no difference to him and I must say he rocked my gear. That is one bad boy.

I have the CD Free to Worship and it came with a four track DVD featuring Snoop Evans on a cool Warrior. Are you talking about that or an even longer feature?

What bass was Thaddeus playing? I saw a really nice P/J Callowhill with a Hipshot D-tuner that he ordered a while back on the Callowhill thread.

The first time Jill Scott came to Nashville, Thad was playing bass for her. He was killin' it. The next time Adam Blackstone was playing, but wasn't as exciting as Thad.
Also, saw him rocking a Wasburn too.

I don't know how I missed these when you first posted them.
Thaddeus Tribbett by far, has the funkiest groove I have ever heard in Gospel!

I think that black P/J he has is a Fender Zone Bass (MIK.)

Dr. Constant Flux, man you always opening my little mind up. THNX! I'm just gonna follow you 'round for a while. Don't fret, I'm exactly the kind of soul you want watchin' your back.

Nice stuff.

( raised in the RC church, hypocracy and $$$$ put a nail in my spiritual growth and I had to split so my search for orenda could continue, but they never took my faith.)
