Thanks TB..I now know why I dislike Phil Collins.

Sign in to disble this ad
Because his bass player sounds like poop.

Bass Player:
"So, um, Phil, um, did you, like....... like the sound"???

Phil(Backing away slowly):
"Yeah..it was great...who knew you could get a bass and an amp at radio shack?"

Bass Player:
"Wow....Phil is talking at me.......I wonder what he is saying???"

Guitarists have it easy....bass tone is tough!!!!!!!!
I gave up 25yrs of guitar to take up the bass...
I think I have got it!
I think I have pretty good tone, check out my

Huh... I don't like Phil Collins cause I find him to be a little... erm... over-rated? Yeah... pretty much. But, hey, whatever floats your boat, mate.

You may have good tone, and that's nice for you. His bass players (on at least some of his recordings) were Nathan East and Leland Sklar. So maybe it's the mix that sounds like poop, or maybe it's your AM radio that sounds like poop. Nathan and Lee are not known for sounding like poop.

Well..sorry Bongo, but I have heard his stuff thru fine car stereo's and even finer home audio equipment. I guess its not so much a bass player problem as it is a producer problem......
'cause most of his tunes have really poopy bass tones.
Of Course, this is JMOHO..........who happens to have very refined killer bass tone.

Two words (okay a letter and a word):

"Brand X"

That should cure criticisms of Phil Collins and of at least one of "his" bassists.

also, i've tried all my players, but i was unable to hear your tone in that picture.

seriously though, it's ironic that you post that gear - iirc i used to see lee sklar in ads for swr gear. might be totally offbase, but he might have recorded the stuff with the same gear you have.

i agree with you, though in that if there's any problems with the final bass tone on something like one of phil collins' works it would most likely be a production issue.

OK..I should admit that I am biased; and I am only basing my opinion on the few songs that I hear on the radio...I suppose if you have the patience and the earplugs to actually sit thru an entire CD you might actually find a decent bassline or two.
But the top 40 stuff has poo poo for basslines

I don't dislike Phil personally, but I'm amazed that a drummer of his caliber, who for years was in some of the most creative and progressive bands, chucked all that exploratory faculty and monster drum chop to play cheap-o pop crap aimed at middle-aged housewives. Not that I have anything against middle-aged housewives, either! Their taste in music isn't usually the most adventurous.

The plus side is we got to hear Chester Thompson!

And the players he's used were always #1 call players as has been mentioned.

Phil doesn't see the genius of the Ramones. There is no hope for him.

already regretting getting dragged....into ....this...thread.....

Perhaps the OPs fecal experiences have led him to equate poo poo, poopy, and poop with other tonal adjectives such as fat, round, thick, dark, muddy, et.al In fact, lets just consider this a mad-lib exercise and agree wholeheartedly. "Yes, XYZ bass player can really bring that poop (read as "fat") tone"

I dislike his music from the '80s onward intensely, but I can't see anything wrong with the bass lines. As has been said, killer players with great tone--in fact, the bass parts are the only thing I like about his stuff.

Phil is one of my music heroes and I have enjoyed his music for over 30yrs. He also has a wicked sense of humor, so it could be that he was having some fun with the interview.
