Theres Plenty of Great Bass players?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ive been thinking about this for a while... and Man good bassists really are everywhere?..

After leaving my cave a few times in the last month im a little bit surprised how many good bassists there are in my city let alone world.. players out there

are great bass players really a dime a dozen?

How do i find good musicians to play with if they all already have bass players?

Lots of em around me too. As far as I'm concerned that's a good thing. Heck we've even got Jaco's nephew to contend with here. If you feel you're not improving, change your practice habits. Play something else. Work on different bass players stuff rather than the ones you're playing now.

And most of all don't sweat it. Relax and have fun.

its not a competition, just keep on practicing and refine "Your" sound. the best players I know are more obsessed with the instrument then trying to be the best.

From what I hear, there's plenty of great lovers too, but that's never really slowed me down.

It's all about how much MOTIVATION you have...

When I was a teenager I took some lessons with a bassist named Wyatt Ruther who had played with Charlie Parker, Dave Brubeck, Errol Garner and tons of other people.
He was driving a cab part time when I met him.

Oh, there are some players in South Florida...went to college down there and there are some FOR REAL players..If you are never happy with your playing you will never be happy with your playing.
Another news flash, if you stop practicing, you will never be happy with your playing.
One thing I've taken from the great ones is that they never try to sound like anybody else..they do them and they enjoy other people doing themselves......What is good to you anyway?

Don't try to be the best. It's bass playing, not Pokemon. I guaruntee that for every great bass player that's been signed, there are 10 others who are better. Musicianship isn't about being the best ever (That's something a bunch of dumb kids do to prove they have better taste than their friends) Bass playing is about being the best you can be, and challenging yourself because you love the instrument. If all you do is try to be the best, and just kill yourself praccticing, then you've missed the point. Yeah, it's fun to play challenging stuff, but don't play it just so you can say you can.

It's a very big world out there filled with monster players from all over. I'm 58 and can't believe how good some of the young kids are these days. They could wipe the floor with me! I'm not talking about the "tricksters" either, but those kids who really know what they're doing and why they're doing it.

I bet there's a million of them out there who could show this old dog a few new things.

I'm just excited to learn stuff. I almost peed myself when I figured out Thank You by Sly and the Family Stone by ear. I have virtually no dicernable skill. Just kinda located it first try and bam, pee.

Don't compare yourself to other people, just try to do the best YOU can.

Hey... I'm not the best, I know this for a fact. But when I get a groove down or hear something I think is challenging and "get it" within a few passes, I am totally in heaven. I play because I REALLY enjoy it. Do I want to be great, of course. Am I getting there, yes. Does it matter that so and so is advancing sooner than I may be, not really. And I don't really care. I'm happy they are "getting it" too.
