Heard Weather Reports "Birdland" on my morning drive in today. Now the top was down, the warm sunshine shooing away the evening coolness (in El Nino Los Angeles no less), and the bass lines just jumped out of the speakers.
Most of us have all played this or other tunes (to death) and, just sometimes, there is that magical moment when things take off. Your solo becomes inspired and you are no longer aping Jaco's excellent technique, but flying on your own.
I listened and remembered how the 'live' version of their show wasn't really that different than the recorded, right down to Mr. Shorter's sax solo.
I also remember one night doing this tune, with a quintet and the guitar play just shredding the solo. The place exploded with cheers after his solo. The bass solo followed, and it was a hard act to beat (start low and slow and build...).
Although the example above is perhaps not the best, these are our Serengeti moments when we kill. There are great moments in this thing we do and some people really appreciate it other than just the players. Tell us about yours...
