Any fans of Tim Bogert out there? I have been a huge fan of Tim for longer than I care to admit to, his daring lines on classics that he recorded with Jeff Beck are amazing, just check out "Lady" and the original version of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition". Yes, Stevie wrote Superstition for Jeff Beck and the original recording is the one off of the "Beck, Bogert, and Appice" LP. Chime in guys, there is a lot to be learned from the "Old School"!

But unfortunately for them, there was a Police Car parked nearby and they were "apprehended" - I was watching close by and I got to hear some of the ensuing conversation :
Police : Why did you do that?
Friends : Because we didn't see you there!

All my friends at that time were either guitar players or drummers so I was practically alone. They were all ga-ga over Jeff. (They still are ga-ga over Jeff) and I kept saying "listen to what Bogert is playing, listen." and they would say, "yeah that's great, I wonder what Jeff is doing there, etc, etc.
Guitar players, sheesh.

He uses a pick on "Guiltless Glider", probably the only track he ever played with a pick according to the liner notes. Not that you could tell it from the sound, the rumble is there wheter he picked or plucked. |

| | | | I've got a video of Tim with Vanilla Fudge, circa 1968, doing You Keep Me Hanging On. I love it. That band was great. Tim really got into his playing, with a lot of body english thrown in. Carmine Appice was a monster drummer, too. |

Saw BB&A and Cactus as much as I could back in Ohio in the 70's.

One of the first concerts I ever saw.
Cactus opened for Jimi Hendrix.
I was only ten years old.
But will never forget the sound of Tim's massive P-bass tone.
PS Hendrix wan't bad either. |

I've listened to everything of his that I can get my hands on, Vanilla Fudge, BBA, DBA with Rick Derringer, and of course Cactus. He and Carmine Appice are one of the best rock rhythm sections ever. I am messing around with his intro to "Can't Judge A Book" from his Cactus days - what a great greasy bass line.

I have Boxer's first two albums and the first one is especially very good. The third album which featured Bogert was altogether a different band, the original rhythm section (Tony Newman and Keith Ellis) and the greatest guitarist ever Ollie Halsall had gone leaving the singer Mike Patto to pick up the pieces.
BTW, sad to think that 3/4 of the original band is dead, drummer Newman is the only surviving member. |

The lead singer Mike Patto and the guitarist on first two albums, Ollie Halsall, played in Patto before they formed Boxer. http://www.myspace.com/pattotheband
Listen especially "Give It All Away". One of my favourite bands ever. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
