Thought this might be of interest, but Tim is riding (a bike) in the Race Across America - RAAM this year from Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD.
He's on a 4-man relay team (Team Surfing USA) with Laird Hamilton, Jason Winn, and Don Wildman.
For those that don't know...The race is non-stop, and is about 3,000 miles. Each rider will put in over 750 miles in about six days or so.
The solo riders have to do it all in less than 12 days, with the elite soloists finishing in about nine days. About 333 miles per day. They don't sleep much.
Anyway, it's www.raceacrossamerica.org and Tim's team is here: http://www.raceacrossamerica.org/raa...type_tblPage=3
The women soloists started today, the men soloists start tomorrow, and the teams all start on Saturday. |

I knew he biked because I remembered reading somewhere that he broke his collar bone once in a biking accident. That is why he wears the giant straps.
I wish I could do something like that but I'm pretty sure I would die of a heart attack, stroke, and I would probably get hit by a car. ha ha.

Most train all year, and in the few months leading up, they're on the bike doing sleep deprivation training. 200 miles through the night or more, sleep for a couple hours, then repeat. Even at 15 mph (which is fast for RAAM, with nearly 100,000' of climbing total), 200 miles is 14 hours in the saddle...just for training.
Also keep in mind that these people aren't pros. Most of them are fundraising just to get a RV rented for a couple of weeks. Then there's bikes (each rider needs at least two), tires, food, water, energy 'stuff'...a single RAAM racer needs to invest close to $12,000 just for the race.
Then there's the crew. All that fundraising needs to feed 3-4 people who are watching you ride a bike all day. |

Heck, even my last two centuries pale in comparison! Those RAAM riders make even most triathletes look wimpy, and I have a LOT of respect for seriouis triathletes...

That and the documentary from Audioslave's Out Of Exile album where Tim's biking all over Cuba is how I found out he's a pretty avid biker. Go tim.com!

Apparently he goes as far as thanking all of his MOuntain Bikes in the inro line of one of their later songs. Reading an article about him in Wiki really inspired me as a bassist, specially the bit about MTBing.

I had a roommate who was a competitive ultra-marathon cyclist, and was training for RAAM. The dedication required is unreal, and the other factor is that the more hours you spend on the bike on the road, the greater your chances of being hit by a car. Bill was ko'd from competition/training twice in about 18 mos because of auto/bike collisions.
