Anybody know how he gets that sweet, punchy tone? I've been listening to Mercyful Fate's "Melissa" alot lately, and his tone is awesome, especially on "Into the Coven". From the pictures on the inside of the booklet, he's got a T-Bird, but anybody know if he used any effects, and more importantly, how do cheaply replicate his tone?

I'm also a big fan of Timi Hansen. His work with Mercyful Fate is great and also he played on King Diamond's first two albums (Fatal Portrait and Abigail.) Unfortunately I don't think many people out there know about him or what he was doing back then. I attached a picture of him I have playing what looks to be an older BC Rich Eagle. I would say your best bet is getting something like a P bass or a T bird and playing through a tube amp. Maybe bump the mids up a little bit. I love the old heavy metal tones many of the bass players had. What gear are you using now?
Well right now I've just a low-end Ibanez and a 300W Behringer amp, but my parents said for Christmas I could pick out a new bass and (oddly enough) t an MIM Fender and an Epi T-bird were on my list of basses to try out.
i love king diamond and mercyful fate, timi hanson primerily played a gibson grabber bass and loves them so much he actually changed his middle name to grabber which was his nickname before the forming om mercyful fate (he was i believe in the band black rose and maybe the brats with kind diamond back when king was still kim peterson and a guitar player.
