Ive always been impressed when ive heard this guy play with the Doobie Brothers. He has such a full tone that cuts through perfectly. He has a great balance of groove , melody , and that driving force. |

| | | | He's great! Judging by the tone he gets, it sound like he played a Fender Precision on the old DB recordings. "Long Train Running" is probably my favorite Doobie Brothers song with the bassline also being my favorite by Tiran.

Seriously, what tone, what taste!

I still love playing "Long Train Running". Played it last night, in fact!

I also love playing the China Grove...
Tiran Porter had a tone that I can really identify with...clean yet sits in the mix very well
seems he put out two solo albums in 1995....
"Playing to an Empty" House and "Themes One"

| | | | One of my favourite '70s bassists.
Love his outro thing on "Another Park, Another Sunday".
Nice work on "Rio", "Wheels Of Fortune", & "8th Avenus Shuffle" (all from Taking It To The Streets).

Also various P and Jazz basses, Gibson EBOL? Last time I met up with him, he was using a MM Sabre and a Kubiki Factor 4 when playing with a local band "Snail". One of his favorite basses, was a beat up 60's jazz. One of the techs in the shop revamped the bass with a quilted maple top......2 jazz pups, with an added EBO pup at the neck.
The cat was too cool.....I was just a kid out of hs, working at the Guitarworks in Santa Cruz, when I met him. He was showing John our tech, his new Matin acoustic bass. John kept on asking Tiran, so...do you want me to swap strings for you? set it up? adjust something? Tiran replied: you do what you want.....it's yours. Happy B-day man! Pretty nice guy in my book.

Long Train Running is definitely one of the all time classics!

Pretty nice guy in my book. | I'm thinkin' that "Long Train Running" was most-likely recorded on a Jazz with both pickups on full...I can get 90% of the way there with my P/J (J pickup on full, and P pickup backed off "just enough" to get the sound to open up a bit)....Those with Jazzes and P/J's know what I'm talkin' about. |

| | Sponsored by Jagermeister | | Join Date: Nov 2002 Location: Seattle / Tacoma | | | Yup Tiran is great, the feel, the tone, and he played with all the techniques and made it all absolutely fit just right in Doobie's songs...then sing in perfect key behind it all.
He sure seemed to play every bass under the sun back then; P's, J's, Alembic, Ric, Gibsons, and I loved that 70's BC Rich Eagle-had such a killer tone.
The one video I saw of 'Long Train' showed him playing a 68-70 single-coil Telecaster Bass. |

"Bass Player TV" also has a lot of video with him showing his various basses and talking about what basses he used on what tracks.
Turns out he used many different basses (and still does) throughout the years.

For a pick player, he was so rhythmic, he could make it sound like he was playing with his fingers.
His tone; It was perfect but I bet if anybody heard the bass by itself they would say "yuck, way to trebly".
