Finally, a good quality live 'Youtube' clip of Tommy Kennedy soloing with his signature Fodera and Markbass rig (although I'm sure you are hearing the pure DI through the mains in the recording).
This really is representative of what Tommy sounds like live. Pretty amazing. http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/...=1337891178225 |

I mean, its just another rich middle-aged white dude playing jazz on some custom megabux single-cut (grrrrr) tonewood bass with actives going through an expensive rig with some chorused up jazz guitarist vamping in the background...

He has been a jobbing musician for 35 years, and while he plays some high profile gigs (here with Mike Stern, of Miles Davis fame), these are not big money gigs.
Secondly, it's not my particular thing either, but I appreciate anything that is done very well, and this is done VERY well.
I guess to your point, and looking at it from another direction, Duck Dunn would be another middle age white guy playing the same old tired licks to old songs with an outdated instrument with yet another guitarist playing a Tele into a Twin Reverb Everything is relative to your tastes and experience.

His right hand technique is just ridiculous... super 'hard' technique also... he can bring rigs to their KNEES with that strong, percussive touch he has. |

| | | | I was fortunate enough to witness an "All Stars Jam" with members from the Dave Weckl/Mike Stern Band (Tom Kennedy) and the Yellowjackets (Jimmy Haslip). They did a half hour jam over the blues (Straight Note Chaser) and I knew it was going to be something special when Tom Kennedy was doing his warm-up exercises. Haslip was incredible too, but Tom really grabbed me with that incredible, authoritative tone and his deft lines. More importantly, he SWUNG. It was the most incredible swing playing I've heard with an electric, and Tom pretty much did all the walking lines while Jimmy did chords with his 6 string.
With regards to his tone, I understand that besides his incredibly percussive touch near the bridge, his pickup position also helps alot with that "Jaco burp". I've heard that this can be the kind of vibe which Sadowsky Moderns can capture with those powerful soapbars close at the bridge. Very interesting... |

And yes, the Sadowsky Moderns do that in spades! From what I understand, Tommy had that pickup configuration done given his liking of Music Man basses, but he primarily uses only the bridge pickup at this point. Killer tone, and he is really digging the Markbass rig (he's using a Momark800 and the 410HLF as his primary rig at the moment)... very articulate and punchy!
And, in case you aren't aware of it, Tommy is a KILLER straight ahead player on DB. His brother (Ray Kennedy... John Pizzarelli's piano player) and he have some pretty amazing straight ahead recordings out.

Yep, that's Tommy alright. Amazing solo chops. He plays Double Bass with equal virtuosity. He is touring with Mike Stern all over the world. Only comes back to St. Louis about once a year now. Glad to see that he finally took the plunge. He deserves the recognition he's getting now. It's well earned.

He has so much groove going on there it gives me the creeps. Yeah, Tom's got chops but he's definitely in the pocket too.

Yeah, Tom's got chops but he's definitely in the pocket too. | I love Tom's work with the Dave Weckl Band, back about 8 years ago. The DW, TK, Jay Oliver, Brandon Fields and Buzz Feiten lineup was just amazing.
Rocking, slamming, grooving, sensitive... probably my favorite fusion band ever.
Too bad they didn't stay together long. The two shows I saw with that lineup had me dying for more.
Tom Kennedy also played on the Planet X stuff with Derek Sherinian, Virgil Donati and Tony MacAlpine. RIDICULOUS metal-fusion.
