Anyone else think he is underrated and has some awsome lines? I love SRV stuff and this guy is one great bassist to me. "Crossfire" has an awsome driving bassline that I cant quite nail as a newbie yet. But you listen to anything he played on and he sounds great. He never seems to get any mention though.

I dig Tommy.
His playing with Winter was cool too.

But the King of Austin Blues Bass was.
Keith Ferguson.

To me, Tommy Shannon is one of those "wish I could be as good as him" bassists. He holds down a perfect groove, but it's never excessive or too fancy. I think he and Duck Dunn have that in common. And the SRV stuff was absolutely wonderful...a definition of playing what was right for the music.

If you like him on Crossfire, listen to him on Couldn't Stand the Weather. He knows when to let it loose!

Agreed

Tommy is one of the cats that just exuded 'groove'.

I think, like most blues bass players, that he's underrated simply because he doesn't go into 10 bars of 64th notes every song.

Tasteful, driving, understated groove is what he's all about.

Tommy is quite simply one of the best blues bassplayers alive.

+100 to all of the above.

We cover quite a few SRV's and they're all quite amazing.
"House is a Rockin' " is a blast to play!

Yeah he was great with SRV. Ya'll should check him out with storyville and arcangels also. I've seen him live with both of them and he was amazing.
Most of the stuff I play in blues songs is based on his lines.

Completely agree! I popped my bass cherry so to speak playing older SRV but it wasn't till 10 years later that I could really appreciate Shannon's lines. To me, it was always about the notes Tommy didn't play rather than the ones he did.

There was a good NPR interview with Tommy a while back...Maybe Fresh Air. Very intelligent & sincere guy who 'gets' what playing the bass is all about. He's the go-to BassPlayer for some heavy hitters. Glad he's still with us and still playing.

He's a nice guy, I've chatted with him several times. If you're ever in Austin visit Egos, he's there a lot.

I wouldn't call him underrated at all. He is regarded as one of the best blues bassplayers, if not the best. He had his own column in Bass Guitar magazine which focused mainly on more popular modern players. He is amazing for sure, but I'm pretty sure he gets his credit for it.

Tommy auditioned for the Stones when Bill Wyman left. Of course they went with Darryl Jones; but it's hard to imagine how anybody could pass on Tommy Shannon. Maybe he just didn't have "the look" that the Stones wanted. He definitely has the chops.

He is one incredible master of the groove. I put him up there with
any of the legends of great classic bass playing.

I never considered Tommy underrated. Just one of those "pocket" players that doesnt get mentioned as much. Chuck Rainey comes to mind when you mention Tommy. Same category of players. Darryl is in the same boat.

I really dig Tommy's basslines. Play a few of them live as well. Exceptionally tasty, and I cant make them any better than he did for the music and groove. I.e, they're perfect.
