Tommy Sims - bassist/producer, latest gospel works

Tommy Sims is great. What he has done with Israel Houghton's Power of One album is amazing. The 2nd track is ridiculous, and then the production just keeps going up from there!!!

He also plays some ridiculous bass in there with some of the best bass tone I've ever heard.

Does anyone with connections to Tommy know or have the desire to find out what bass and any other gear he used? It just sounds so fat, phat, crisp, modern, vintage, clean, dirty, in your face. Seriously!

Check him out from his 2000 solo CD. Awesome! The man has a wide range of styles.

The Power of Oneis easily one of the best CDs of 2009. I love it, and my kids go crazy over it. I think it is a great example of excellent bass work that is not dominant or super heavy in the mix like Fred Hammond or Hezekiah Walker style mixes.

True, but the bass is super prominent and just sits in the mix beautifully.

I love the album, too.

I really dug his tone and chops (and writing) back in the day when he was in White Heart...

I know I'm splitting hairs, but compared to music like that of Fred Hammond and Hezekiah Walker, Tommy Sims didn't mix the bass as high as they tend to for most of the tracks on The Power of One.

I think he mainly uses an old Fender jazz.

Makes sense.
Sounds like an old jazz, but quite hyped up. I love it.

It's also definitely either tuned a whole step down or a 5 string of some kind.

he uses p-basses and yamaha 5-string basses as well. oh, and i saw pictures from the "power of one" sessions where he used his white jazz bass with emg's and an avalon u5 di. box.

check out "real" from israel houghton. it is the same production team and tommy played his heart out on that one.

Stevie Wonder's left hand was a big influence on his bass playing.

just listen how tight he is, wow. his bassplaying on the record "the power of one" is just incredible. and he's a monster keyboarder, singer, guitarist, songwriter and producer, too. i sometimes can't believe all that talent in one single person...
