tone

don't wanna hijack the thread currently interesting (and probably should move this thread)

question:

how do u guys view "tone"?

i think it comes from many areas, in this order:

1)heart and mind
2)fingers/pick
3)instrument
4)amp

here is why: if i had the same bass and amp as geddy (see 3 & 4) i am not gonna sound like him (see 1 & 2)

your thoughts?

interesting question, man. I think it's a different order of priorities for different players. there are some cats for whom technique is definitely the top priority while for others it's the passion. for me personally I'd rank them the same way you have them listed above.

example: a few years ago I went to the Bozeman Bass Bash. Greg Campbell was playing a maple and swamp ash Warrior with active electronics. my main bass was my wenge and walnut Conklin with passive electronics. we traded basses and each still got our signature sound from the basses we were playing at the moment.
