Hey all
This afternoon I took my family to see The Kruger Brothers play in Palm Beach. Friday night and Saturday day I attended a guitar/banjo workshop with them (I play acoustic guitar too). The workshop was fantastic. I learned more in a day and an evening than I could possibly absorb in several years about music in general and guitar playing (and bass playing). They're both world class musicians and the nicest people.
At the concert this afternoon, I found tone heaven. Joel Landsberg, their bassist, has the sweetest sound imaginable. It filled the hall with a warmth that was indescribable and was matched perfectly to the music. They played one set with Bobby Hicks, a famous and fantastic fiddler who played with Bill Monroe. That second set was more old-time music. The first set included many Kruger Brothers originals.
Joel played some really fine solos, as they all took turns soloing, but his timing and tone and beautiful note selection was a joy to hear. He plays an unusual acoustic bass in many of their shows and videos but today he was playing what looked to be an old P-bass. You can see it in this video, which is from their web site for their new CD. Beautiful stuff. Check them out. I never would have known about them but for my guitar teacher who is a huge fan and sponsored the workshop.
