I got to see this guy up close and meet him last night at a SWR clinic at Union Music in Worcester MA! Man this guy IS a monster fretless player. He demoed the new SWR stuff as well as his new Fender signature fretless bass (Want One!!) and it was killer. What a super human being! He took the time and hung out with Me and couple of bass bro's after the clinic for a 1/2 hour or so to answer all my stupid questions and snap a few pics,,, lol!
It was awesome, The first time I have ever hung with a top player that I grew up listening to..... I broke out my Firm and Blue Murder disc's and been spinning them constantly. Picked up his new solo disc also, Great Stuff.
I'll tell ya what I was diggin on the new SWR stuff, Really in your face kinda tone. He got everything from the Ampeg grit to the GK slap thunder outa that rig. The new little combo they have going on is pretty cool also. I gotta get out and try for my self....
Here's just a couple of pics.

Yeah, Funkster we had a great time. Sliding harmonics and all that great stuff. Man he's got all the tricks. Yeah, that SWR stuff nice. Like $450 for that 200 watt combo w/ tilt back didn't seem bad to me, but I'd like to try it first. The Rain Song on his 5 string fretless was amazing. Have a good time Saturday. Get up front if you can. He'll blow you away.

I have to agree...

I have to agree with the previous writers. His playing on Blue Murder is simply amazing.

(Inicidentally, the playing on Screaming Blue Murder Live is awesome as well. Marco Mendoza is the player on there).

not to change the subject here but i saw MARCO on the new WHITESNAKE dvd and i wasn't to impressed i like RUDY SARZO better.(but the sound on the dvd favors the guitars more than the bass)

going back to TONY....the first time i heard BLUE MURDER i was like ... his lines on the first track are awesome

Tony was also in Whitesnake for a short time in '96 touring Europe. Marco uses the cheater lines on his bass. Nothing against that, but I prefer no lines.

Someone here mentioned the video he does for Sony a few weeks ago. After watching it I decided I needed a fretless too. I would like to buy his signature Fender but I'm not sure if I want to dish out all those $$$. His fretless work is killer. I just ordered the Firm CD and now I may have to find some Blue Murder stuff too.

I only know of him from the Firm.

Pretty badass, especially in that context.

Those demos were pretty sweet. The tone he was getting was... interesting. Was there anything in the chain other than bass and amp?

I really liked how he "demonstrated using a pick" to get more bite from the fretless.

Thanks for the videos. I have a book with some collected articles from Tony Franklin (and others) and I keep meaning to get his CD's... maybe I should do that now.

wowwww, finally got to see TONY and it was an awesome clinic he's indeed the fretless monster.
he was pretty nice, answered all questions ,play some riffs that we ask if could play for us and some good on the road stories not to forget some of us got to take pics with him...
in my opinion for being such a good bassist he's a very humble guy
