Why has no one told me about this guy? Forever I have been looking to hear the fretless player with the perfect tone- melodic without sounding thin, great intonation, and insane groove. What would you say is the key element of that tone - the P pickup, the rosewood board, or the fact that he's so dang good?

He's the main reason I play fretless... here is some history since you missed it previously....

Me, too. As soon as I heard The Firm's first release, I went straight out and bought a fretless.

I was a too broke high school kid, I ripped the frets out of my bass instead

Midnight Moonlight still gives me chills!

That's some good music there. For someone who listens to such a wide variety of music, I'm surprised I never got around to Tony Franklin and The Firm. It's like an oasis in the musical desert that was the 80s.

Yes, ebony is so much nicer than rosewood. IMO, IME.

And it's the bass as a whole that is just awesome. I own a TF signature.
There is just something special about a fretless precision bass, aside from it being an oxymoron.

Although lately, I'm really digging the diamondwood fretless fingerboard on my Roscoe.
Very nice... plus the rest of Roscoe.
Diamondwood will make me want to order a fretless Roscoe again in the future.

But the Tony Franklin fretless precision has that kinda vibe and soul. I will never get rid of it.

edit:
sorry for the derailment, this thread is more about the man than his signature bass

Well, I play a fretless with a P-pup and rosewood board, so it can't possibly be that ...

oh, didn't know it was ebony, I thought I heard him mention somewhere that it was rosewood. Still, he could probably get a good sound out a balsawood fingerboard. I've always been more attracted to fretless Ps than Js, although my only fretless is a Jazz (inexpensive!).

Could be that Tony Franklin had a P bass with rosewood fingerboard, ... or that at some point his signature basses had rosewood fingerboards. Not sure.
Mine's ebony.

Yup, I love P's too.
I gigged a long time with a MIM fretless jazz. But I'm glad I have the Tony Franklin now. So much nicer, to me.
I prefer P basses.

But my fretless P lately has been taken a backseat to my Roscoe.
Took a long time for me to get used to a modern (fretless) bass.

But I wont get rid of the TF.
It is an expensive instrument though, it's worth it to me, overpriced in the opinion of other bassists I assume.

You can also make a fretless P on a budget.
Your favourite P bass and order an aftermarket fretless neck.

Mine's ebony.
His original P bass, had a rosewood fingerboard, but he was damaging it a lot, so they gave it a coat of finish.

When he got the signature model, he spec'd ebony instead, to prevent wear, and thats what he uses now.

FWIW, the "The Firm" stuff, was all done on the old bass with the rosewood board.

I bought a Tony Franklin sig bass without knowing who he was. I really wanted a fretless P bass and thats the only one Fender put out at the moment. I Youtubed some of his stuff and can't say I was too impressed. Some of that 80s stuff is pretty naff. Nice bass though. I might have to change the neck plate.
