While I always loved his playing on everything with Peter Gabriel I am absolutely blown away by his upright playing on the song "No way Out" on up.
In the chorus of this song, he is playing what sounds like the most ridiculously difficult double stop passage I have ever heard. Either that or he is overdubbing another bass part to get beautiful, perfectly intonated chords that don't get in the way of the vocals.
Of course this song has a lot of overdubbed bass parts but does anyone know how he plays this?
Also, what beside Peter Gabriel can you recommend that I listen to to learn more about his playing? |

Ooh! Ooh! Pick me, pick me! Can I go, huh? Please?
In no particular order:
- Paul Simon: One Trick Pony
- King Crimson: Beat
- Alice Cooper: Welcome To My Nightmare
- Steps: NYC
- Bozzio/Levin/Stevens: Black Light Syndrome
- Robert Fripp: Exposure
- Tony Levin: Waters Of Eden
- John Lennon: Double Fantasy
- Joan Armatrading: Walk Under Ladders
When you're done w/ them, I'll give you your next assignment.
Or, just go here and work your way down the entire list: http://www.papabear.com/discography.html |

If I can download all these off Itunes I'll create my own Tony Levin super playlist. Should be good for the soul. |

I also never knew, untill reading his book, that TL was in a band called Aha! The Attack Of the Green Slime Beast with an ex-Zappa keyboard player, and a tights-wearing back-up dancer by the name of... Danny DeVito.
Yes, that Danny DeVito.
Just try picturing that.

Double Espresso by the Tony Levin band is a great live recording and I also particularly like Tony's Resonator CD. But I think my favourite TL recording is Peter Gabriel's Secret World Live CD.

I just remember because the double bass playing on that song really got to me when i first heard it and made this song my favorite on the album.
As to Tony Levin:
paula cole's Amen is good.
There's also a buddy rich album which I like.
King crimson comes to mind as well.
His solo albums too( the first one being my favorite)
Steps ahead "NYC" is alright too.

I happened to see the band chilling out in the site manager's office before the show. I popped in and 'saw' Tony Levin. I was a bit intimidated to say hello. He looked like a beast though! Massive hands. Could do some damage!
Good times...
Should have spoken to him though!?
My drummer went to the toilet and had a 'waiting for the urinal to be free' chat with Peter Gabriel - TWICE! On two separate days... What a Weekend that was...
He seemed like a nice bloke by the way, good hero to have. He was just chilling out in the office on a laptop with a cup of coffee - no arrogance.
Thought I'd contribute my silly story.
Take it easy guys.
