Peter Gabriel's "So" is what got me interested in bass. I remember being in complete awe as I cranked that album and listened to it over and over and over. Still one of my tope five albums.

Check out Tony's website. He has a resume like you read about.

As for material? King Crimson, 1981-1984 (lots of stick too). Some later Crimso too.

A big +1 to this. Also get the King Crimson Deja Vroom DVD for the more self indulgent side of Levin. Actually, he's usually the only anchor on that DVD. Tony Levin is, IMHO, the greatest bassist on the planet!

He was absolutely made for Gabriel's band.

I love his self-description also: " I get paid to play as few notes as possible at exactly the right time."

I wonder what he got paid, to drum on that bass, in the linked video.

He also had a group with Steve Stevens and Tony Bozzio. Rather predictably, the band is named Bozzio Levins Stevens, but the music is anything but predictable! Very interesting stuff indeed.

+1. This didn't impress me at all.

I love Levin though. His work with Gabriel is unreal. SOOOOOO different than anyone else out there IMO.

Listen to the bass line (if you can call it that!) in "In Your Eyes". Especially in the chorus/pre-chorus. No idea how a bassist could come up with something so friggin' weird but so perfectly fitting.

Tony Levin, like Billy Sheehan, would have a fan in me even if I didn't like his music. He's a funny, modest, and genuinely nice guy who reaches out to his fans and has a genuine desire to connect with his audience. That and he's pretty good.

I seem to recall Guy Pratt saying that he owes his entire career to Tony Levin, if only for being overbooked so often that producers would eventually need to break down and call Guy.

No idea what the genesis of that bassline was, but fwiw the bass part on the original recording of "In Your Eyes" is credited to two different players: both Tony Levin and Larry Klein play on that track.

To the OP, a few more recommendations of Tony's stellar work:

- Steps Ahead, NYC
- Joan Armatrading, Walk Under Ladders
- John Lennon, Double Fantasy
- Paul Simon, One Trick Pony
- Tony Levin, Waters Of Eden

...but yeah, the King Crimson & Peter Gabriel stuff is where his individuality really shines imho.

My favorite Tony Levin moments are on KC's Discipline and Peter Gabriel's Us. I think he comes out better in Us than he does in Secret World Live (though Manu Katche is drumming out of his mind in the live set).

Some great work on that album, but I get annoyed by Stevens' wanking after a while. It's like he's going "Me! Me too!" instead of playing along sometimes. Bozzio doesn't get enough respect IMHO; the guy is a tasteful and expressive percussionist.

For the greatest rhythm section in prog rock (that would be Bruford and Levin), not only the KC albums but also the Bruford Levin Upper Extremities (B.L.U.E.) disc is an interesting listen. Also the ProjeKCt One, if you can find any recordings.

I made Funk Fingers from the instructions at Tony's site. (he posted them once he couldn't secure a decent manufacturing deal.

2 drumsticks
1 hard washer
Wood Glue
Velcro Straps
Saw
Carving Knife

They are insanely fun!!!!
