Hopefully this is in the right forum, I apologize if it should be in effects...
Does anybody have any idea what Tony Levin is using to get that incredible growl on this song (Paradigm Shift by Liquid Tension Experiment)? It cuts through and sustains without seeming overly fuzzy or bright. Also, he uses a nice flange effect later in the song (4:40), what is that?
Somebody mentioned they thought it was played on a stick, but the articulation and string bending sounds like a bass guitar to me, so that means probably a Stingray.
I'd actually like to know what effects he uses on the whole album, any clues? |

He's just that good. |

I've always thought it was played on a 4 string, and people have stated they prefer it over Acid Rain beause you can play it on a 4 string. Acid Raid is 100% stick. Paradigm Shift always sounded like a 4 string to me...

So there ya go.

I'm guessing he can make it sound pretty much the same either way. So, what effects (distortion/flange/etc.) does it sound like he is using? |

I'm listening to it now and haven't heard any Stick or use of Funk Fingers on bass either, the tone is not quite *that* percussive. It's certainly true that Funk Fingers on bass does sound fairly close to Stick, but probably a bit more like slap bass. On this song, he's simply employing great technique, great processing and lots of bending and sliding into/out of notes to give it fluidity. The tone is nice and bitey (standard Stingray treble EQ) and he's using some sort of distortion/overdrive effect, not sure of the brand/model. Yep, that *is* a nice Flanger effect too, wouldn't mind one myself!
P.S: Yes, I play Stick, have a very good ear for music and am a huge fan of TL, so I'm not just guessing.
Cheers,

But it really isn't clear what was played on which track. In the recording diary, on the last day, it says Tony "does his bass tracks on Paradigm". Maybe? Still could be a stick, but who knows.
It still sounds like a bass to me. The stick is more compressed and controlled sounding, especially the way Tony Levin plays it. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
