Man, it would take me about half a song to bump the amps off that stage!

First of all, they didn't play it as a Funk tune but as a Funky Fusion tune and anyone who thinks Dave Weckl can't play funk needs to listen to all his works and not judge him on limited listening.

well hey, c'mon now, i didn't say that dave weckl can't play funk. matter of fact, i really like a lot of what i've heard from him and enjoy watching him play. but, i didn't think that what he played in the video, posted in this thread labelled "too funky to not share", was particularly funky. also, whether it's a funky fusion or not is irrelevant to my point, because it wasn't denoted as such when posted.

Weckl's playing is super-busy, but I like it and admire the virtuosity. He's just not an "empty space" kind of guy.

Clearly every one of those players is a monster musician. And I agree with the sentiments of DWBass, this is more of a fusion feel than a funk feel.

I have no doubt in my mind that those musicians could get seriously funky if they chose to do so.

Whoooaa! Thats all cool and funk NASTY! I dig the chick on the end with the lace up suit! My favorite part is the leg lift. Gotta love ol James. And about the Chicken song....AWESOME player! Wish I could boogie like that!

The James Brown wins hands down for me, by such a margin that it's immeasurable (and I'm sure Jaco would agree as he loved JB). The Jaco clip is nice, but the Weckl clip leaves me cold too. Don't like the bass sound (too polite & weedy for me) and the solo....oh dear. It's not that I don't like fast (I do when it's done well), but please...focus!!! I've really gone off most fusion playing over the past year. I still love Stanley, and I really like Matt Garrison and Janek Gwizdala, but beyond that for some reason it now leaves me cold, whereas I used to be a big fusion fan. It may be something to do with the last Bass Day UK where every punter who turned up had exactly the same sound and played exactly the same way. I had to leave early because it gave me a headache!!!
