Do you play it all on the d string, or open d with the c and higher d on the g string? I prefer the latter as a finger player, but the former with a pick. Although either way is rendered useless unless you master the left hand damping.

Its all d string regardless of pick or fingers and yes the damping is the key to getting it right, I describe it as the second half of the riff having a "false start" if you know what I mean
