Yeah... I'm sure they're out there, but the only ones I could think of were Paul and Doug

Jimmy Haslip's good - until he tries to solo.
Eugene Gales has a pretty funky groove, but the Gales bros are pretty far under the radar of most. The best part is that he's naturally right handed, but his uncle (who taught him guitar) played lefty and that was the only way Eugene had ever seen it done.

The Late Wayman Tisdale
Gerald Johnson
The incredible- Colin Hodgkinson

They're all on you tube... Wayman was a wonderful bassist. His takes on Earth, Wind And Fire tunes with bass as lead voice are great! Gerald was with Steve Miller, Dave Mason, and CSN-Y he has a KILLER feel. Look up "Everything You Need" with some blues group or another on youtube- he's got a green p-bass with a righty neck- a funky killer bass solo on that. Colin was playing amazing things, a long time ago with the English pioneering electric jazz group "Back Door", and almost no one knows of him. Of the three, Colin is the only one to play 'correctly' as with the 'E' string on top.

Same for Haslip.

Horne used to play around bars here in a band called Secrets (w/ Carter Beauford, Tim Reynolds, Dane Bryant, Butch Taylor, etc).
You could literally sit 3ft away...and not have the waiteress hassle you for drinks (& sometimes I was thirsty & needed a couple!).

I recall seeing an old In Concert with Steve Miller...the bassist, sitting down & playing a Fender P-bass, was killin' it!

I missed Back Door...until someone hipped/reminded us all at TB about 10 years ago. They were great!

The late Paul Gray from Slipknot, had a good bass sound that cut through 8 other members in his band. I respect him for his abilities and whilst he may not have been one of the world's best bassist's, being taken early in his life, I am sure the next generation of angsty teenagers will see him as the world's greatest bassist, just like how Kurt Cobain was the world's greatest songwriter once
