Trey Gunn: What does he really bring to King Crimson?

Sign in to disble this ad
I see Trey Gunn in videos in King Crimson and he seems to be tapping away, but I don't ever hear it. I tried isolating Thrak to try to hear him, but all I heard was Tony Leivn no matter what ear I went in. I would love to think that Trey is great, but I just can't pick anything out. On songs like "Level 5," or anything after Thrak for that matter, I can hear him since he's pretty much the only "bassist" per se. What does he bring for the double trio?

He adds very little

I have a DVD of a double trio peformance, Trey's quiet there too, he mostly seems to double what everyone does. If the guitar needs strength, he doubles that, if the bass needs power, he doubles the bass. He plays some of the leads on Thrak I though were guitars, I don't know which ones exactly, it's hard to point out. Even watching the vids, I'm usually like "what is he doing?"

Strange considering he's so mind bogglingly talented.

There are some really bad videos of him on the Warr Guitars site that nevertheless show his mastery of the Warr Guitar.

Check out the DVD that comes with Untune The Sky. In the last band version he was in, what you thought was Fripp was often really Trey.

Not real familiar with the stuff where he replaced Levin. I thought he was kind of useless in the double trio. Dare I say so was Mastalotto

This is quite true.

However, I think he's highly underrated. I was watching a video of Trey, Fripp, Adrian, and Pat playing "Level 5" and dang, he was tearing it up!

Having seen the double trio live, I found the Warr very difficult to hear much of the time. I also saw Trey with Eric Johnson on the Vortexan tour where he was handling all the bass, and he was difficult to hear in that setting as well. Don't know if the problem has been house sound, Trey's amp rig, the Warr or a combination of all three.

I'd say from all angles, they didn't take advantage of the double trio. Everybody played real subtle, which was cool, but in reality, if the all kicked it up, they could have been a single trio. I just think there should have been more parts of absolute chaos ala "the crazy part" of Sex Sleep...

Listen to the THRAK disc again, the way they mixed it, it has one trio one the left channel, the other on the right. Belew, Levin, and Bruford are on the right. Fripp, Gunn, and Mastellotto are on the left.

I agree that Gunn was a bit useless in the double trio. Fripp wanted to give it try and see if it worked. It didn't. Not that I'm bashing Gunn, the man smokes, he just didn't have much to do in that format.
From what I've read about the Crim double trio, it was nothing but a mess from day 1. From arranging to live sound, stage setup, etc. There was just too much. Like stuffing 2 orchestras into one hall at the some time. Overkill.

Gunn in the current KC lineup is awesome. I saw them twice on the Construkction Of Light tour, and was just amazed. Check out the Eyes Wide Open dvd, too!

Last time I saw him, he was quite chunky. Looked like Terry Gilliam from Monty Python!

i have never heard any gunn-era KC, but i have heard gunn before, and i wonder...do you know what you are supposed to be listening to?
i know the man plays a lot of midi stuff and heavily distorted guitar sounds, so maybe thats the problem?

Yep, that's the tricky part. Gunn plays a "guitar" type sound a lot of the time. That's why some "guitar solos" on Thrakk are Warr solos.

Trey Gunn kicks serious ass.

I saw his solo band three times in 2002:
http://www.chromatic-fantasy.com/200...ase/index.html
http://www.chromatic-fantasy.com/200...and/index.html
http://www.chromatic-fantasy.com/200...and/index.html

Songs from two of these shows are on his DVD.

As far as Crimson goes, his best days with them are in the quartet version. Heavy Construkction is one of the best live albums in the universe.

Actually on THRAK, he kind of laid low most of the time. I read an interview with him where he said he didn't even think there was much for him to do. With TL on bass and Fripp and Belew on guitars, he just went for a tenor/baritone range and stayed there.

Well, Belew certainly didn't play subtle.... The "Thrak Attack" CD is a pretty great example of the Double Trio at their best. The live DVD is pretty fantastic also.

Well, I guess my reference was more to the rhythm section.

Yes. Go get Heavy ConstruKCtion, and the illustrated version Eyes Wide Open. That stuff rules! (Eyes Wide Open: IMO the Japan concert is far superior to the London concert, production-wise)
