Trying to get a sound similar to Ryan from Mudvayne

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all, I am trying to get a tone similar to Ryan from Mudvayne, more specifically the song "Internal Primates Forever"from L.D.50 and "IMN" from Lost and Found for a couple of covers.

My gear is Warwick Corvette $$ 5 string through a GK 1001RB2 with 4x10SBX and 1x15SBX cabs. I figure I should be able to get pretty close with this setup but I can't seem to ever get it. Mostly the higher notes he plays, doesn't seem to have that clarity or edge he gets. Or the well defined chunk of the B-string for that matter...

Any help is appreciated.

Forgive me if this is the wrong place to ask...

What strings are you using ? Because with that rig and that bass the strings are about the only thing I can think of stopping you getting close.

I just did a quick search and Ryan uses DR Hi-Beams. So if you havent tried those give them a shot. I personally use these and love them! I would maybe suggest Dean Markley Blue Steels but to be honest I dont know if they would hold up with that kind of playing style.

Thats funny that you recommend HI-Beams... I've used those string on all of my basses up until I got this Warwick, I bought the Warwick brand yellow label nickel strings for this one.

Well, think about this. His recording setup is Ampeg + a Mesa guitar cab and I'm sure he's cranked LOUD while recording. Also, are you splitting your humbuckers into single coils?

Before you start messing with your bass and consider new gear etc. Do try a set of new Hi-Beams.

Oh no, I am not considering new gear, not just to get a couple of covers to sound a little bit better. I am quite happy with my rig when I am playing our own music. I was just hoping for some amp/bass setting tweaks to help push me in the right direction toward Ryan's sound.

GrindYourMind: thanks for the single coil suggestion. I can't believe I overlooked something so simple. It definitely helped.

Ryan is currently using a warwick rig - the svt4 pro + 2x810 rig is gone...what you hear on their last albums are his warwick neck through thumb basses to the board via an avalon U5 DI...as far as strings he's been using DR lo rider steels and bottlenecks for a while...the DR coated strings lately

to get his tone all you need is a warwick thumb and some studio magic

I've never had the chance to play a Thumb, neck through or otherwise. Is the tone that much different than a Corvette?

Elixir coated? personally i can get some gnarly tones out of those, and for a month or two of heavy gigs/practice. worth every $. maybe boost some mids.. study his physical technique, and practice, then practice 10,000 more times. (tone is in the fingers right?)

Strings won't bring it. That is but a small nuance of his tone.

Practice a lot.

That dude has some chops.

You can have the same exact rig as the artist you dig and never sound like him unless you really get into the technique that guy is doing.

Believe me, I've chased a couple tones.

agreed. that thumb tone is very unique, with all the hard woods involved and the two j pickups real close to the bridge.
