Trying to learn bass
I'm a drummer who has been playing for 2 years, and I'm trying to learn the bass guitar. Can anybody give me any tips on how to start learning? Thank you!
Notes are cool. :-)
But seriously, there are a ton of resources and you should probably be looking in the General Instruction forum. When I started:
And there's a guy on youtube that is hyperkinetic but does a good job of walking through some popular basslines.. http://www.youtube.com/user/Dmanlamius76?feature=watch
Bass is a rhythm instrument - some would say a percussive instrument - just like the drums.
If you're any good as a drummer, You probably already have a lot of transferable skills.

You could also look into Ed Friedland's books/CD bass lesson series.
Play it. Play it a lot. Play to the radio. Play to your favorite music. Play a lot.
I use various learning tools and am trying to learn to read music as I always felt that was lacking in my game. Learning the notes on the fret board is really useful as well when you start playing with others. Use whatever learning tools you can find that you like. In my practice space I have a few posters that show notes and chords and such to help me learn while I'm practicing and give me ideas when creating.
Keep your fingers as close to the fret board as you can, while difficult at first it is a good habit to get into. It will help your speed.
But mainly play. Play a lot.
