Well, if you really want to get technical about this, it could also be said that living contributes to ones demise. (I'm confident that our 'house-doctor' (Mike) can back me on that).

Actually, Spearhead, Jaco died in Ft Lauderdale Beach, not Miami Beach. And while he didn't die from drug use directly, it certainly did contribute to his demise. There are those who theorize that Jaco was manic-depressive, and attempted to "treat" himself through alcohol and drug abuse. A close friend of mine studied with Jaco for several years before he "hit the bigtime", and knew him very well. He said that watching Jaco slide down was easily the saddest experience of his life. For more insight than jazzbo's excellent post, check out Bill Milkowski's biography of Jaco.

The saddest and most tragic part of the whole story is that Luc Havan, the @$$hole that beat Jaco to death never spent a single night in jail for doing so. He must have been a real tough guy, studied martial arts all his life, and managed to beat to death a small drunken man who was most certainly unable to defend himself, although he was capable of being pretty obnoxious from the reports of his late life. If there is a hell, may Luc Havan rot there for eternity.
Havan served 4 months of a 22 month sentence handed down for a plea bargain from 2nd degree murder down to manslaughter. This is in Milkowski's book. And yeah, that's no where near long enough for what he did.

OOPS!!! Thanks for straightening that out, Mike!

And yeah, there's no way that was "justice".

Unhappy

Jaco was a phenom!!! I had the priviledge of meeting his brother Rory.I was working at this restaurant in Virginia Beach when one night this dude walks in weaing a Zawinal's Syndicate baseball hat.At first glance I thought he(Rory) was Garry Willis.So...I asked him about the hat and somehow we got on the subject of his brother. He says, "You might have heard of my brother, Jaco Pastorious." I stood dumbfounded.Whoa!!!I gave him my condolences about Jaco's death. He appreciated it and went in to have his dinner. It made my night .That's the closest I'll ever get to meeting Jaco. What a terrible loss to the music community.

All I remember is "parli piu lentamente per favore," "sono vegetariano," e "trentadue." Trentadue being one of my favorite California wines, it's easy to remember.

That is seriously cool Xavier, but why'd you give him a sunburst Jazz, that's not what I play. I'm not even going to ask how you did that, because it's probably WAY over my head.

That happens to be a Pastoriouos Tribute Jazz. And it happens to be one of the basses I play.
