Ukulele?

Have any other bassists branched out into ukulele playing? I have, and have found them not a million miles away from bass guitars. Any one else find this?

Yep, baritone uke is a lot of fun. My 80 year old mother in law started playing a couple years ago and got her daughters (including my wife) interested in playing. Then I started jamming with them. We play nursing home gigs from time to time.

I actually own more ukes than basses, and I have 25 basses in my collection

A school I taught at 7 years ago had a buncha old baritone ukes. I fixed em up and used em with my 4th graders. Liked em so much I got one for myself. Every place I have taught since I have got a set of bari ukes to use with my general music classes. Kids dig em, they are less expensive than guitars, and only 4 strings (tuned the same as the highest 4 on the guitar). We play folk, rock, whatever. I use my baritone uke when writing songs because I suck on the 6 string.

I love ukulele. I have a few and tend to keep the soprano in the car with me at all times for red lights and such. My tenor fluke is my favorite though.

I recently picked up a double bass. Talk about polar opposite - as far as stringed instruments go at least.

I have a bari uke. Play Django Reinhardt songs on it
After all, it is just a tiny guitar without the bottom two strings

Been thinking of getting a ukulele lately. Just have some songs on the brain that I want to play, and I did play a small amount of uke during my bachelor's degree (classroom instruments methods class).

Neat to find others who do/want to play.

By the way, I was looking up uke cover songs on YouTube. There are many. Plus, there's Jake S who is a virtuoso or something close to it. I like his version of the Beatles' "In My Life".

I just started messing around with a bari. Easy to learn if you know basic guitar chords. Also easy to carry around. I am planning to make this my vacation instrument.

My sister inlaw just bought a banjo-uke the other day and I got to play it. Pretty cool actually.

I've got two uke's. I usually record songs on the uke with bass and glockenspiel. it's a fun sound. but everyone should try a uke, they're not too expensive and light. it's a perfect travel instrument.

I have, and in a big way . Ukulele and bass make for a great combination. My daughter and I have a musical duo featuring uke and upright bass (we also play a few other instruments). We were featured on YouTube last year just released a CD of original material which has become quite popular with the online ukulele community. Check it out: The Barnkickers

I've been wanting to get a uke before Bonnaroo this year. Guitar and bass are just too big to take and I hated being instrumentless for 4 days. My son bought a ocarina there, but I had nothing.
