| | | | Someone mentioned Andy Rourke, who is a great underrated pick. Seriously, the Smiths were one of the (relatively few) great things going in the 80's. His bass work on "Barbarism Begins At Home" should be checked out by anyone not familiar with them. Massively underrated, as are most guys who spend the bulk of their time "serving the song".
As for Roger Waters, it's hard for me to consider him an underrated bassist. He's pretty rudimentary and he himself freely admits this. According to David Gilmour, he (Dave) played some of the trickier bass parts himself in the studio--and Waters does not deny that. Doesn't mean Waters isn't a musical giant--he is--but as a player, he's just serviceable. |

He's covered almost every style imaginable with both Faith No More and his side projects over the past 20 or so years.
Ball tearing metal in "surprise you're dead" to smooth RnB in "evidence" to reggae inspired bass in "just a man", plus being one of the originators of the whole "funk metal" scene from the late 80's-early 90's.

The guy is super innovative and always sticks to his guns, writing awesome basslines and awesome solo-y parts that really add to their sound. Unfortunately, due to some ****** mixing he gets buried really badly under the guitars, which is a crying shame, because he really doesn't get the credit he deserves.

| | | | I'll add a big +1 to Dennis Dunaway and Dee Murray.
Lately I've been listening to (pretty sure it is) Lebron Scott playing with Francine Reed and I think he does a fabulous job.

| | | | I have to disagree with the serviceable comment on Roger Waters- yes he was not playing the more complicated parts many albums and even had another bassist on tour for Animals and the Wall (Snowy White I believe), but what he does play is distinct and has its own style and timing. I think he falls in the less is more catagory because he is effective at rocking out a simple structure of notes - Careful with that Ax, Astronomy D are great examples. I also really enjoy his choice of tone, especially '74-'77 - his phaser, echo config is great.
As for another underrated bassist- I would say Ronnie Wood. Check out Fingerprint File- |

Come to think of it, he's a great singer in his own right. Superman, Texarkana, and other songs. In a George Harrison, underrated kind of way.
