unprofessional?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello.
I have a question that's been bugging me.

here we go.
I'm younger, and i play in a "screamo" band.
We all love the music and move around quite a bit.

but to the public, is it unprofessional that I, the bassist, have a wireless and i go and "mosh" with the crowd while playing?

Its fun for me and the band loves it too..but I was thinking from the Public Perspective that they might think the band is dumb, or "look at that idiot running around with a guitar" and pass us up. or a label rep. see me/us and think we're too crazy.

whats your thoughts, guys and gals?

I don't know about unprofessional, but it might seem corny given your genre. I mostly associated that type of "crowd surfing" to cover bands and tribute bands, not indie bands.

But I'm not really into the screamo scene, so I don't have a great frame of reference.

I don't think its unprofessional as long as everyone is having a good time. Shoot, when i was in my old punk band i used to wear a full gauntlet with 1.25" spikes all over it so people wouldn't bump into me haha.

No way dude, if you like it, your band likes it, and the crowd likes it, then by all means continue. People usually tend to judge a band by their music and crowd reaction instead of their on-stage antics. And if they are judging you by your on-stage antics, @#$% 'em.

Let me put it this way: if you're concerned about your image on stage doing such things, why are you doing them in the first place?

If you are doing it to satisfy the image you and your band are trying to present, why are you bothering?

If you are doing it to have fun, then why stop to think about it?

Be expressive within your own limits. Don't force yourself to do anything if it's not "you", you dig?

So in other words: if you crowd surf and someone injures you, bleed on their face.

At one of the few screamo concerts I've had the pleasure of attending, the singer hocked a fat loogie into the crowd, and the people loved it. They dove to catch saliva. Is that unprofessional? Or as long as every consenting individual is having a good time...

If you like doing it, your band likes you doing it, and the crowd likes it, keep doing it. I used to do it all the time when I was the singer for a hardcore punk band, and the only one to complain was the soundguy.

at the risk of being a jerk, you play in a metalcore band.

I personally get megairritated at people who plan their movements before they play. Do whatever you feel like. The only thing that i'm 100% against is literally taking your instrument off and dancing. We recently toured with a band who's members would literally bludgeon the audience. severely. I have no problem with this as long as you can tell that it's actually due to them feeling it, not them trying to LOOK like they're feeling it.

screamo is a fairly diverse genre from the early and mid-nineties that includes some really really harsh bands and some really really pretty bands. go on wikipedia for more info. Examples would be Orchid, Guyana Punchline, Joshua Fit for Battle, etc.

it's also become a kind of popular buzzword nowadays for bands playing melodic metal with "breakdowns", which are usually chugged out breaks in which people are expected to dance.

Nah, the buzz word is "hardcore", which is really "metalcore".

I play in a hardcore band. i've played in screamo bands. I hear my little brothers friends talking about trite screamy pop music like Underoath as "screamo". Oh well. I don't even consider half that stuff metalcore even. I'm old and cranky.

If it causes you to gain money, or at least get close thereunto, it's professional.

If it causes you to lose money, or at least get close thereunto, it's unprofessional.

That's generally my guide.
